surely yuuei would let them have a performance! one a is very successful this year!
@catsuki replied:
true, not letting them perform would be ridiculous
The music stops and all what can only be heard in the studio is their heavy breaths. Izuku feels the exhaustion down to his bones. Slowly, he relaxes his body before falling to his butt.
“Get up, Deku. One more.” Katsuki says although he doesn’t look that better than the rest of them. His heaving pants almost sound like he is having an asthma attack.
Thankfully, Denki comes to his rescue. “Dude, can’t we have a break or something? We’ve been dancing non-stop for, what, two hours now?”
Eijirou makes a sound of agreement and walks to the other side of the room, probably to the water dispenser. Izuku hears Katsuki following him with a grumble not long after.
Groaning, Izuku lays like a starfish on the ground. They all been on the edge since Yuuei invited them to perform a month ago. Sure, they’re the opening and the shortest performance in the whole event but they could not bring themselves to complain. Yuuei is the most prestigious musical award show and to be invited is such a high honour, especially that they’re still considered as a rookie group.
He didn’t- they didn’t think their group would get this far. When they debuted, they tried not get their expectations up. The music world is a harsh place and only the best could remain. In their debut year, they fortunately sold enough not to be disbanded. They gained a good amount of fans, having a few thousand followers on their group Twitter account.
This year though, their comeback didn’t only sell enough, but it became successful. Not only that the music video is nearing sixty million views, it also stayed on the weekly top ten chart for three weeks.
A miracle, really, and their group is lucky they managed to have it.
Izuku stares at the studio’s white ceiling, gosh their studio is so monochrome , and feels his heart slow down from its rapid beating. Their song is still blasting from the speakers and despite being drained, his muscles still twitch, as if trying to move around with the music. He closes his eyes and runs their routine in his head. The second chorus nears, he has to go to the center for that part, and five, four, three, two, one.
“Midoriya, Sir Toshinori is looking for you.”
He cranes his head and raises an eyebrow in question to their manager. He couldn’t use his vocal cords. Izuku is that tired.
Tenya, their manager, pushes his glasses up, making him look even more uptight. Izuku would have a good giggle if he weren’t so worn out. “All what he said was there’s an important news he has to tell you.”
Eijirou appears beside him holding a cup of water and offers his free hand to Izuku. Such an angel. Izuku takes his hand and pushes himself up. He mumbles a low “Can I?” as he gestures to the water.
Eijirou smiles. “Drink up! You look beat, man!” He says as he pushes the cup to Izuku’s hand.
Izuku downs it so fast, it didn’t feel like he really drank. “Thanks.” He croaks before following Tenya to the CEO office.

“Sir? Iida said you were looking for me.” Izuku calls out as he peeks in Toshinori’s office.
The man lifts his eyes up from the folder he’s looking at. “Ah, Young Midoriya… please come in.” Toshinori gestures for him to come inside as he walks around his desk and to the couches. He sits down and Izuku hurries to settle on the couch opposite to him.
“Before anything else, how are the practices going?” He asks, pouring tea for the both of them that Tenya most probably prepared earlier. Toshinori hands him one of the cups and Izuku accepts gratefully. “Chamomile. I know you must be tired and sore right now.”
Izuku laughs. “Yeah, Kacchan wants to perfect the routine. If our knees aren’t bended in a certain degree for half a second, we would have to do it from the top again. You know how he is.”
Toshinori shakes his head in fond exasperation. “That child.”
“I think you shouldn’t call him that when you’re near him, sir.”
He chuckles. “Right. He would throw a fit.”
“Like a child.” Izuku snorts.
They spend a good time just waiting for the other to lose it before both dissolve into chortles.
Five years ago, Izuku didn’t even imagine that he would be able to sit down with Toshinori Yagi, All Might himself, for tea and laugh about his childhood friend’s brutal perfectionist tendencies. He was only a back-up dancer in variety shows and a concert once. He landed a good deal on that one.
Suddenly, All Might, Japan’s most successful producer and talent agency CEO, approaches him after one show and shoving compliment after compliment to a shell-shocked Izuku. There’s only four back-up dancers in the performance, including him, but to be noticed like that is straight out of fairy tales.
“Can you sing? Or rap?” Toshinori asked him, pulling him out of his internal break down back then.
“S-Sing?” Izuku squeaked and Toshinori nodded with a patient smile. “I can sing… I think.”
The taller man laughed good-naturedly. “Would it possible for me to hear you sing?”
And so, Izuku sang. The song he had sung is his mom’s favorite song. Its chorus has a difficult high note and while he was singing he inwardly regretted his song choice. He should’ve picked an easier song, not one that is easy to mess up, but it was the first one that popped in his mind and his mouth opened before he could think.
Yet, he pulled it off.
Toshinori gaped at him for a few seconds after he sang and a moment of panic surged through him. Was he really that bad? Was All Might disappointed? “Wow.” Toshinori said. “I think it would be foolish for me to let you continue your current job.”
“What?” He tilted his head in confusion.
“Young man, would you like to join my company to be an idol?”
The answer is easy and here Izuku is today. He sips on his tea and hums in satisfaction as he feels its warmth slowly descend in him, not like the water he rushed to drink before.
“Yuuei e-mailed me just now.” Toshinori says and he wasn’t sure if the ominousity is intentionally there.
Still, Izuku feels dread coming down on him. “Is it about out performance? Did they pull us out?”
Blue eyes widened. “No, no. One A is still performing. They won’t take back something like that.”
Izuku sighs in relief. “What did Yuuei e-mail you about?”
“Ah, yes. They’re requesting another performance number from you, Young Midoriya.”
“M-Me? Why?” He sputters.
Toshinori smiles at him. “Why not?”
Oh, he could think multiple reasons but he decides to stay silent about it. “What kind of performance? Don’t you think I would have a too limited time if I will only start rehearsing for it now?”
“It’s a singing-only type of performance plus you’re only going to cover a song so I think you wouldn’t have a hard time preparing for this.”
Izuku nods.
“It’s also a duet.” Toshinori adds.
“Okay… So, I would have to sing with someone? Who would it be?”
“Todoroki Shouto.”
Izuku stills on his seat. Todoroki Shouto, or simply Shouto as he insists, is one of Japan’s most successful solo artist and he achieved that in under a year after debuting, a year earlier than One A’s debut. Being an artist in Endeavor Entertainment and the Endeavor CEO’s son helped him a lot in gaining popularity in the country.
Shouto is a reserved man regardless of being a celebrity. He is rarely seen outside even by the most dedicated fans. The only things that reminds the world that he exist are his world tours, rare guest appearances in variety shows, even rarer Instagram posts of his cat or studio, and his continuous domination in the music charts.
Media labeled him as ‘cold’ but his fans, especially those who watched him perform live, contrastingly describe him as ‘warm’.
Izuku has yet put a good word to describe him.
“An inter-company collaboration? Did Shouto already agree?” Izuku asks. It is also a common knowledge that All Might and Endeavor have some kind of rivalry.
“I believe Young Iida is already taking care of that. He’ll tell you if Endeavor accepted the request.” A pause. “Do you accept, Young Midoriya?”
“Why not?” Izuku hears Toshinori words earlier in his mind.
“Yes.”
Toshinori nods with a proud smile. “Finish your tea. I think you still have time before Young Bakugou demands another practice.”

Todoroki Shouto’s side agreed on the same day in one condition set by Shouto himself: practices would only be held in All Might’s agency building.
“It’s actually no big deal but setting a formal condition like that, it makes me feel… intrigued, I guess?” Izuku rants to his bandmates as they lounge around in their dorms. Only the three of them are actually lazing around, Katsuki is in their kitchen, preparing their dinner.
Izuku thinks that if they didn’t have Katsuki, they might have fallen to malnutrition due to instant noodles and protein bars.
Eijirou and Denki put a ‘thinking face’ at the same time.
“I bet he’s being sent by his goddamn daddy to spy on All Might.” Katsuki huffs as he stirs the curry that Eijirou requested for their dinner.
Denki makes an exaggerated gasp. “That’s actually a good conspiracy theory, Katsuki!”
Said blond whips around with a glare. “I was only kidding, you dumb fuck!” He bellows. His face is amazingly terrifying if it weren’t for his ‘Don’t Mess With The Chef’ apron. The three of them could barely hold their snickers. He glares even harder at them before turning back to turn off the stove. “Dinner’s ready. I hope you shitfaces are here on the table in three seconds if you don’t want to starve.”
They’re tired, sore, and hungry from dance rehearsals yet they managed to jump and rush to their dinner table. Katsuki is a man of his words, after all, and his cooking is bomb.
Nobody speaks as they get their own serving of rice and curry, their mouths salivating from the deliciously pungent smell of the food and spices. Without any hesitation, they dug to their plates then moaning in unison from the warm burst of flavors. Katsuki just looks thoroughly done with them.
“Oh my goodness! Marry me, Katsuki!” Eijirou exclaims, mouth full.
Denki whines in protest. “No way! I asked him that last night!” He bleats, mouth also full.
“Idiots! Stop speaking while chewing! It’s disgusting!”
Izuku swallows the food in his mouth and hums in satisfaction. He puts a fist over his heart and imitates a troubled shojo manga girl. “I’m sure I’ll be the one he marries. He proposed to me when we were still young and naive. Right, Kacchan?” He bats his eyes at Katsuki, who’s shaking in irritation.
“What the fuck? No!” He roared over Eijirou and Denki’s fake sobbing.
A pause then a fit of sniggering ensues, even the corners of Katsuki’s mouth quirks up.
“Okay, okay!” Eijirou wheezes. “Back to the topic beforehand,” He pointedly ignores Katsuki’s “I’d rather not.” He leans forward to the table and stage whispers. “I think it’s possible Shouto’s being sent as a spy. Aren’t his father and All Might rivals in the industry?”
Denki’s face lights up like he solved the greatest cold case in the world. “Oh yeah!” He also leans forward and stage whispers. “There are rumours that the big CEO Todoroki wants to replace All Might as the top entertainment agency, right? Maybe he wants to see how we do the job here like how Plankton in Spongebob wants the patty recipe!”
“Dude…” Eijirou drags out, his eyes wide.
They proceeded to make an invisible map for their theory, hands waving around, and almost hitting things on the table. Izuku moves their plates and cups away from them and half-listens as he eats. On the other hand, Katsuki gives up and ignores them while shoving food into his mouth and scrolling down his phone.
“What do you think?” Izuku flinches in surprise when Eijirou directs the question to him.
“Well,” He clears his throat. “I don’t think Endeavor plays that way. Todoroki Enji seems to be a prideful man and he would want to beat All Might in his own ways, you know? If he do the job our way, he might take it like he didn’t win over All Might.”
“It doesn’t matter what that fucker’s company would do. We’ll just do better.” Katuski says as he stands up and puts his plate and cup on the sink. “You guys clean up.” He tells them whilst walking to his room. Izuku can’t see his face but he knows his friend is smirking.
That’s the moment Eijirou and Denki remembers that there’s still a mountain of food on their plates and Izuku hurries with his last two spoonfuls. Chewing his last, he places his utensils on the sink.
“Good night, guys!” He grins at the remaining two on the table who are racing to finish eating first so they wouldn’t be on clean up duty as he walks away.

The song is an old one and Yuuei wants to revive it in honor of its ten year anniversary. It is full of miserable and heartbroken emotion that Izuku thinks he might need to drink beer to properly execute the feeling within the song.
Shouto is expected to arrive back to Japan on that day and they’ll begin rehearsing together after his five day post-tour vacation. Izuku knows he doesn’t have to trouble himself with the performance but ‘taking it easy’ has never been part of his vocabulary.
He listens to the song one more time before looking up the lyrics and the karaoke version. Izuku hums. Maybe, the stage managers would design the stage like a karaoke booth? It seems fitting for Izuku.
He tries sing the whole song since he and Shouto haven’t decided on who gets which part. Izuku notes the lines where he stumbles with his words and the parts where he couldn’t get the note right.
“Hey, man. What are you doing?” Denki asks as he peeks to his room.
“Ah, I’m practicing for the duet.” He answers, scratching the back of his head.
The blond whistles. “Already? I thought you'd start next week?”
Izuku could only laugh sheepishly. “Now you’re already here, can you tell me what you think?” He questions, gesturing to the opened lyric video. Denki is the other vocalist in their group and his insight would be helpful for him.
“Sure!”
Izuku scoots to the side to give space to Denki to sit on and demonstrates what he had practiced so far. His bandmate listens attentively and gives encouraging smiles when he messes up with the lines.
“I think you would suit the first vocalist more.” Denki tells him after the song finishes.
Izuku tilts his head in question. “How do you say so?”
The blond puts a hand under his chin and makes a contemplating noise. “To start, Shouto’s voice is most suitable for ballads and great for those songs with build-up while your voice starts strong and finishes strong so if you’re the first one who’s gonna sing, Shouto could easily continue from your foundation, you get?”
“Y-You think?” Izuku flushes.
“Yeah! Plus, you get to do that sick high note in the last chorus.” Denki fumbles with his laptop and rewinds the video to the mentioned part. “There! You’re great with these stuff!”
He reddens even further. Izuku still can’t receive compliments without being an ‘embarrassed strawberry’ like their fans say. “Thank you…”
Denki pats his back. “On the second stanza though, I think you should not rush on…”

Song of the Year
Let’s do our best to support Shouto!
Izuku wakes up with an abrupt start. His alarm is not on for eight in the morning on Mondays since they usually spend Sundays and Mondays to rest on their bodies and work on their song that are in progress and finalise their upcoming album, however, his phone kept on ringing.
Groggily, he covers his ears with his pillow to drown out the noise. The ringing stops but it didn’t give Izuku time to even sigh in relief when it rings again. With a groan, he reaches for his phone. He squints at the ‘MANAGER IIDA’ with glasses emoji then presses ‘accept’.
“Iida? What’s the matter?” He lets his sleepiness be all over his voice. Tenya’s not stupid nor inconsiderate. If he’ll hear Izuku’s rough and tired grumbling, he would let him sleep some more.
“Midoriya Izuku?” A deep and definitely not Iida Tenya voice replies to him and Izuku bolts awake.
“Who is this? Where is Iida?”
A halt, like the person he’s talking to is shocked for some reason. “Todoroki Shouto. Your manager is in front of me right now.”
Izuku feels something ice cold roll down his back. He looks at his calendar and yes, it’s the day and Todoroki Shouto is already waiting for himself in their building. “Oh…”
Todoroki does not say anything but the line is still connected. He could imagine the guy looking like those impatient and annoyed old businessmen that he used to serve for at his old part time coffee shop job while he was a back-up dancer.
He gets up and speed walks to the bathroom. “Okay, I’ll be down in ten minutes. Tell Iida to take you to studio two, uhm…” He trails, not sure on how to address the other man.
“Alright.” He says before hanging up.
‘Cold.’ Izuku thinks, just like the media says , and rushes to get ready.
“Izuku?” Eijirou calls out to him, emerging from his room. “You’re up early.”
He shrugs and finishes tying up his sneakers. “Shouto arrived earlier than I expected. He even called me using Iida’s phone to wake me up.”
Eijirou laughs but abruptly stops. “Wait, we’ve already been infiltrated by the enemy?!”
Izuku throws Katsuki’s sock that his angry friend always leave above the last shoes he used, a gross habit, at him and runs out of their dorm.
It’s a good thing that they live in the same building as the agency. Five floor levels down and he’s already walking to the studio where he directed Todoroki with two minutes left from the time he had promised.
He knocks on the door, just to be polite, then steps in. The first thing is Todoroki’s unusual hair, split down in the middle with red on the left and white on the right. He has seen it multiple times online but it does not compare to real life.
Shouto’s been sporting the same hairstyle and colour for three years, how the hell did he manage to make it look so soft from constant dyeing?
Izuku gapes at him for a few moments but immediately snaps his mouth close when Todoroki stands up, gives a short bow, and looks at him. He’s a few feet away but the taller man already makes his knees weak with his intense intimidating presence. He feels nervousness that is closely similar to the time he first met Toshinori.
“Hey,” He tries to greet but it comes out rasp. He coughs. “I’m sorry for making you wait. I didn’t expect you to come this early.” Izuku laughs and it quickly dies down when he sees that Todoroki is not amused by even a bit.
“Yeah…” He fiddles with the bottom of his sweater. Todoroki even looks formal and more professional with his white button down polo and black slacks and Izuku feels underdressed. “We don’t have a grand piano like you since no one here yet really needs it but we have a keyboard. I hope you don’t mind.”
Todoroki nods. “It’s fine.” He replies and there’s no annoyance in his voice. Izuku feels relief come down on him and his shoulder slowly relaxes.
They walk towards the keyboard and Izuku settles on the stool beside the instrument but not directly beside the other man. Todoroki sets up the keyboard then places the dark blue clearbook that Izuku just notices he has in front of him. He checks the tuning of the instrument before looking back to Izuku.
“Have you already practiced?” Todoroki asks him and he’s so grateful for his agitated past self.
“Uh, yeah! Yeah, I tried singing the song a couple times last week.”
Todoroki raises a brow. “The whole song? By yourself?”
Izuku rubs a hand on his other hand anxiously. “For the first few times, y-yes. I wanted to know how exactly the song flows, you know? A-And, I also tried to sing with only the part of one of the vocalist then vice versa so that I can know which one is the most fitting for me. Not that I already decided on whose part, I’ll sing! I think it’s for the both of us to decide, right?” He rambles, his hands embarrassingly moving animatedly with his words.
Todoroki looks quite pleased with his answer at least. “Which part do you see fits you the most?” He inquires.
“O-Oh! Mirio’s part. The first vocalist.”
He makes an contemplative hum. “Can I listen? I’ll play only first and you sing his parts.”
Izuku nods eagerly, glad that Todoroki didn’t dismiss his thoughts. He opens the lyrics on his phone then nods to the other to start.
He does not start as good as he was hoping he would be but he managed to adjust his vocals to satisfactory as the song goes on. Todoroki plays well, his fingers press on the keys with certainty like he has no thoughts about messing up.
They continue on like that and when the difficult part came, Izuku closes his eyes and fortunately manages to hit the correct note. When his eyes opens again, he sees Todoroki’s eyes on him, slightly wider than before. He looks surprised, in a good way, and it gives Izuku the confidence he needs.
The song soon finishes and Todoroki looks at him but Izuku does not feel as nervous and intimidated as earlier. He feels like he has already proven himself to the award-winning artist.
“How did I do?” Izuku asks him.
“You’re better than I expected.” He says with a miniscule upwards tug on his lips.
He ignores the possibility of Todoroki looking down on him before. “Thanks!” He beams.
“One more.” Todoroki tells him. “I’ll join you this time. Have the same part.”
Izuku straightens his back and starts singing, Todoroki times the keyboard with him almost perfectly. He feels and does better this time and Izuku feels good about himself.
Then, Todoroki’s part comes up and he’s instantly blown away by how amazing he sounds. His bassy vocals sounds so velvety and rich that Izuku nearly misses his line. The real and close Todoroki Shouto really is better and cannot compare to what the fancams capture.
Their duet needs work but Todoroki’s deep voice surprisingly compliments his near alto vocals. Izuku tries to not overpower Todoroki during his back-up vocals part and drown the other when it’s vice versa.
“I guess it’s settled.” Todoroki says after they finish. “You’ll have Mirio’s part, I’ll have Tamaki’s.”
Izuku smiles. “I’m fine with that.”
A nod. “Alright.” Todoroki grabs his clearbook and clicks on the mechanical pencil that was attached on its spine. “I’ll fix my sheets for a while. You can do whatever you want but not anything too loud. We’ll resume in an hour.”
He’s a strange mix of Tenya and Katsuki, an uptight perfectionist, but more intimidating and distant. The chords sounds close to the real thing, Izuku’s about to comment, when his stomach grumbles.
Right, he haven’t eaten anything for breakfast.
Todoroki is looking at him too with his usual deadpan face, wait- is that amusement on his eyes? Izuku blushes. “I’ll just grab something to eat and be back real quick!” He says, scrambling to get away. “D-Do you want anything?” Izuku asks when he reaches the door. He looks back and Todoroki is thankfully not watching him anymore.
“No, thank you.” Todoroki replies breezily, reviewing his music sheets and pulling one out to make notes on.
Izuku bid farewell and leaves the room hastily. He is not overwhelmed anymore, he tries to convince himself as he jogs back to his dorm, but he could feel himself getting tired from interacting with Todoroki.
This is going to be a long and taxing two months.
He returns with a paper bag of two cheeseburgers. “We might be here for a while.” Izuku reasons as he unwraps his burger. Todoroki looks at him, his face unreadable, before taking own and mumbles a low “Thank you.”
