Now in a drunken stupor, U1146 was led obediently by his friend to the White Blood Cells’ infirmary, AE3803 in their wake with his clothes in her arms. They deposited him on the bed and proceeded to tuck him under the covers, but not before he pulled an embarrassed but cooperative Red Blood Cell into his arms.
So she ended up joining him, and U4989 helped tuck both of them in.
‘So it took him a near-death experience and an overdose of alcohol to be honest with himself,’ U4989 said conversationally, and, being the good friend he decided to be, just for this occasion, he scooped up the bloodied clothes U1146 had relieved himself of, thereby noticing one last problem.
‘I think we forgot to take his pants.’
U1146’s hand shot up like he was answering a question in class. ‘It’s okay,’ he declared, proudly. ‘I may have lost my pants, but I have found my purpose in life.’
‘Just sleep,’ came two simultaneous replies.

Closing the infirmary door quietly behind him, U4989 smiled to himself. He looked over at the new Red Blood Cells, already engaged in animated conversations with the old ones as they transported their loads side-by-side, the macrophages, their dresses impeccably clean again, and the platelets, busy but jovial as they patch up the damage. Wounds will heal and happiness will return, perhaps in greater amounts than before.
Definitely in greater amounts than ever before, he concluded, as he dared a peek through the window and saw, to his great satisfaction, a certain pair of cells snuggled up against each other.
‘Have a good rest,’ he said, soothingly, stepping off into the new, brighter world.
…because you’re gonna get the cytoplasm teased out of you by 37 billion of us when you wake up.
