Oh gosh, good questions! First off doing that live-write was so fun, getting to write while enthusiastic readers watched and got to influence the story was such a blast!
It’s safe to say that Slush and I are not going to return to that story though, we’d originally planned for it to be a single night oneshot event and were surprised when we ended the night only halfway through our planned material since everyone on the stream was having such a good time. Unfortunately we just never got around to planning a second event and before we knew it teacher au was over and done and we’d moved on to other fandoms. But here’s how it would have ended:
So in part 1 of the oneshot Ernesto decided to throw a party to low key celebrate Miguel supposedly leaving soon and his and Hector’s lives “getting back to normal” in the near future, but between Imelda getting drunk and Miguel sneaking away from his babysitter downstairs to creep into the party, things weren’t going super well. There was the upside of Hector’s coworker Gustavo showing up to the party and badmouthing him to Ernesto without realizing Hector was his partner, at which point Ernesto verbally eviscerated the man on the spot with a smile when his protectiveness over Hector flared.
Plans for part 2 included Hector having overheard Ernesto defending him and being quietly grateful for it. Also involved was Miguel climbing a tree in an ill-advised attempt to see the party he was still banned from and then falling right into the deep end of the pool without any of the adults noticing. Except for Ernesto, who dives right in fully clothed with zero hesitation to drag the kid out, making sure that he’s okay and someone yells for Hector. At that point Hector is excused from the party to take care of his very grounded godson and Ernesto goes to change, now very annoyed but also sober over the fact that Miguel could have been very much in danger and grateful he acted fast.
The overall purpose of the oneshot was to chalk up several humanizing points in Ernesto’s favor, especially in regards to how he treated Miguel; aka he’s bad with and uncomfortable around kids, but he does do his best.
When the teacher au started Ernesto was going to end up being a very soap opera-ish villain with a very villanous and messy end to his arc, but the longer the story went on, the more three-dimensional his character became. The Spectacular Party oneshot came around the time that we were busy retooling the next arc to play into Ernesto being a real person as he started to catch the attention and sympathy of both us and the readership.
Ultimately the main storyline ended up accomplishing this well enough, but it’s still too bad we never got to finish the “oneshot”. I still sometimes forget that no one ever got to see the falling into the pool part since Slush and I discussed it so much.
