Chapter Text

A mote of dust floated in through the open window, and softly landed on the sleeping girl’s forehead.

Her brown eyes fluttered open, reacting to the early morning beams of light. She was getting better at waking up early, now, and had even managed to occasionally be the first one awake in the last few months.

The redhead slowly felt her body awaken, but as she tried to move it, she felt resistance. Her gaze flicked down to her side, and a soft mass of purple hair greeted her. The other girl’s arms interlocked with her own, her face still showing her in gentle, peaceful sleep. Her eyelashes were illuminated by the celestial light, and her shining lips still felt as if they were connected with the redhead’s own.

And as she looked to her other side, and above her, or behind her as they laid, the black-haired beauty she’d known from childhood filled her eyes. She had a habit of having her mouth always just ever so slightly open as she slept, and her elegant features made the girl in the center infatuated with her all over again. One of her thighs was under Karen’s neck, serving as a pillow of sorts, and the other lay haphazardly over her chest, essentially sandwiching her between them.

She settled back on the pillows, content with waiting for them to wake up before deciding to disturb this snapshot of heaven. It’d be fine if they said she woke up late again. She just had to tell them how cute they looked when they slept, as she and Hikari took their daily medication, and Mahiru cooked them a most delicious breakfast in preparation for work.

Karen’s no-longer empty heart filled with love once again.

On the bedrest table, a crown, a star, and a sunflower pin were framed.

Notes:

Seven months.

It's been seven months since I posted the first chapter, and since I've had the second chapter ready but was not fully satisfied with it.

But, I couldn't just let Karen's birthday pass me by without doing anything, so I got my ass in gear, rode the wave of my recent surge of productivity, and finished off the story in a way I'm truly satisfied with.

Karen as a character has grown more and more personal to me over time, which might not say great things about my own mental health. Particularly her breakdown, I channeled some... things I've had to deal with recently, that have only gotten worse in recent times. But I'll survive. She did, so there's no way I can't.

Thank you for listening, thank you for reading. Happy birthday, Aijou Karen. You're an inspiration to me and so many others.

Notes:

Y'know, the September 30th thing is real. Look it up. I saw it and everything just... clicked. Always wanted to explore this side of Karen. Pre-beta version, will probably edit in the future. Just wanted to get it out there already. More chapters absolutely to come.

(And yes, the fish and chips thing is also real. Research was done here.)
