Say Something

Chapter 5

Notes:

Yeah....so...haven't updated this in well over a year. I'm not sure why I decided to write another chapter of it today, bc I'm not really sure if its going anywhere. I didn't reread any of it except the last like 2 paragraphs of chapter 4 and then just went for it, so sorry if it makes no sense. I might just do one more chapter to wrap it up at some point and call it complete. IDK. I haven't really written anything since I last updated this.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Garth followed Diana down several hallways and doorways, his girlfriend limp in his arms. He knew healing more serious injuries took a lot out of her and she was just exhausted, but it was never easy for him to see. The state Wally was in was even harder to see, so he knew it would be worth it for all of them if she was able to help him through this. Wonder Woman slowed to a stop in front of an unmarked door, putting her hand to a scanner that signaled the door to open. She followed that by typing in a code on the keypad before turning to the couple behind her.

“She’s welcome to rest in here. It’s one of the spare rooms so it’s very simple, but it should do for the time being.” She explained, stepping into the room. The lights were motion activated, and turned on automatically as she entered. She walked over to the bed and pulled the covers back so Garth could gently lower Raven down into the bed. She hardly acknowledged the movement.

“This will be perfect,” He sat on the side of the bed, unclasping and removing the sorceress’ clock and pulling her boots off, “Thank you Diana.” He said, looking up at her with a light smile.

“Of course. Let me know if you need anything. I’ll see about getting some food down here for the two of you,” She offered, opening a cabinet to pull out some extra blankets and pillows and laying them on the end of the bed.

“She’ll more than likely be out for a few hours, so no rush. I’ll come meet up with you guys in a bit.” He said politely. She nodded, walking towards the door. As she exited, she ran into John. He looked to be in a hurry.

“Where are you going?” He called out to him as he brushed passed her, determination on his face.

“Heading to the cafeteria to get the doctors. Batman wants to run new tests.” He said, only stopping his long strides briefly. She nods, taking a step in the opposite direction before remembering: “We passed them on our way here, I think they were headed to the offices.”
He stopped, sighing.

“You’d think these two would be easier to find. We’ve got to get them each a pager.” He commented, heading towards to office space dedicated for the medical staff. That was where all of the heroes’ medical information was stored.

“I don’t understand why we couldn’t come with them!” Beast Boy complained, shifting into a green gorilla and tossing large chunks of concrete into an even larger truck that would take them away from the city. Where they went? He honestly wasn’t sure.

“We have jobs to do B. We weren’t around to help with the actual action, so this is the least we can do.” Cyborg replied maturely, lifting up a fallen streetlamp and righting it. At least some things could be salvaged.

“Yeah, I know, but it’s the watchtower!” He said, having turned back into his pointy-eared human form, “Don’t tell me you haven’t been dying to go up there!”

“Of course I’d love to go up there. But think about it – do you really want to go up there right now? Flash has to be pretty seriously hurt if Batman is calling Robin for help. They haven’t been on speaking terms in a while.”

“Sparky’s got a point. It’s gotta be tense up there.” Bumblebee said, seemingly coming out of nowhere as she grew back to her regular size and landed atop a pile of debris. She wiped sweat off her forehead. She’d been going through destroyed buildings looking for survivors.

“I just hope Raven’s healing will be enough.” Cyborg responded solemnly.

“It will be.” Bumblebee said seriously, not an ounce of doubt in her voice.

One of the doctors entered the medical bay, feeling small in the room full of superheroes. John entered immediately behind him. He looked annoyed.

“I’m telling you, we just ran tests on him. Even with his accelerated healing, which we know isn’t working at the moment, nothing is going to have changed-“ the doctor cut himself off, noticing the improvements in Wally’s facial injuries. He stepped up to his patient’s bedside and took a closer look. He turned to Superman.

“His healing is working again?” He questioned, eyebrow raised. The Man of Steel shook his head.

“Not quite.” He responded. Dick stepped forward from where he was leaning near the doorway, taking over the conversation.

“Raven healed him as much as she could. She started with his head injuries since they were the most serious. She’s resting now and can continue later, maybe tomorrow.” The doctor was quiet, taking in this information. He glanced at the monitors displaying Flash’s vital signs, and already noticed minor improvements. He nodded, mostly to himself.

“I’ll run a new scan on his head. Everyone is going to need to step out until it’s finished.” He ordered, walking over to the sink to thoroughly wash his hands before snapping on fresh gloves. For a moment, it seemed like Bruce was going to protest, but must have decided against it as he stood and turned to leave without a word.
John, Shayera, Roy, and Clark followed, with Dick staying behind momentarily. Then, with one longing look at his best friend, walked out, door sliding shut behind him with a swoosh. He looked to his right, seeing the three heroes heading off in that direction. Where did Bruce-?

“You should get some rest.” Ah, there he is. He turned to his right to see none other than Batman.

“I should say the same to you.” Dick replied, feeling the tension in the air. The looked at each other for just a moment before Bruce sighed. As much as he didn’t want to admit it, he was exhausted. Physically and emotionally. He hadn’t so much as slept or eaten since arriving at the watchtower after spending a significant amount of time fighting aliens.

“I’ll show you to a room.” He said, turning and walking in the opposite direction. Dick followed. They walked in silence down the hall, the only sound the echoing of their boots against the floor. They both knew how to walk in complete silence, so they must have been allowing the noise on purpose just to fill the quiet. Finally, Dick spoke.

“You know, I’m not mad at you anymore.” He offered. He nearly walked into the back of Bruce as the Dark Knight stopped in his tracks at the words.

“You never had a reason to be.” Dick rolled his eyes behind his domino mask.

“I’m not trying to start an argument with you right now. I had every right to be shocked. It’s not every day you find out your best friend and your father are romantically involved. I just want you to know that – you and me? We are good. I care about you both. If you’re happy and he’s happy, I’m happy.” Dick said, meaning every word. He was sick of this tension and awkwardness between the two. They need to be on each other’s side to survive in this business.

Bruce looked straight at him, searching his masked eyes for something. He wasn’t sure what.

“You can stay in this room right here.” He said, turning to punch in the code to the door next to them. Dick smiled to himself, knowing his message was heard, even if Bruce didn’t show it. He’d known the man long enough to be able to read him. The door slide open, and he noticed that it wasn’t a plain room like the others. There were several unopened juice boxes and snacks sitting on the table, as well as a cardboard cutout of the Flash in the corner that seemed to be taped together from where it had been torn.

“Wally’s room?” Dick asked, knowing this wasn’t the room Bruce had been leading him to initially.

“He doesn’t use it much. You brought so many friends up with you, this will have to do.” Bruce explained, but Dick saw right through it. He’s seen the watchtower blueprints; he knows there’s a dozen or so rooms up here. Not to mention Aqualad and Raven will likely share a room. This is Bruce’s way of saying they are good.
“Get some rest. I’ll get you if anything changes.”

J’onn was in the monitor bay. The cleanup was going smoothly, the Titans helping making it go a lot quicker than it otherwise would’ve. Repairs will take months, but the city will have to take care of that. John, Shayera, Roy, Garth, and Clark had just beamed down to help finish up. He’s suspected they were eager for the distraction.

Bruce entered the room, not acknowledging the Martian as he moved to sit in front of monitor and pull up a communication with Alfred. J’onn listened in silence as he updated the butler on the situation. Alfred, as always, reminded the Dark Knight to take care of himself. Once the call disconnected, J’onn spoke up.

“Alfred is right, you need to rest.”

“Don’t need it.” Bruce replied, not looking away from the monitors where he was now looking at the footage in Gotham.

“There is nothing we can do for him at the moment. You know this as well as anyone.”

Finally, Bruce looked over at the other. At first, it seemed he was going to argue more, but he knew his teammate was right. In a very out of character move for Batman, he nodded and stood, walking out of the monitor room and headed towards his rarely used room on the watchtower.
