Emma groaned and rolled over to look at her phone. She rubbed at her eyes and slid her glasses on before turning her phone on and seeing the numerous texts from Alyssa. She giggled partly from amusement and also because of the giddiness getting a text from Alyssa filled her with. No matter how long they were together Emma could never seem to get over the childlike glee talking to Alyssa gave her.

BITCH WHAT
Emma quickly threw the covers off herself and rushed to the mirror. She saw her messed up hair and interesting ensemble. The emoji sweatpants had become somewhat of a staple in her wardrobe since she got kicked out. As much as Emma hated to admit it, they had grown on her. Not to mention they were ridiculously soft. Her Brooklyn Nine-Nine T-shirt hung loosely off her shoulders. It didn’t necessarily look bad , but it looked rather chaotic paired with the emoji pants. The bags under her eyes and red prints pressed onto her cheek left behind from her pillow didn’t help her current appearance.
She thought about trying to get dressed in the two minutes she had before Alyssa arrived, but decided against it. Emma knew she’d probably just end up looking more chaotic than she already did. She also just really wanted to go back to sleep. Emma yawned before climbing back into bed and throwing the covers over herself. Alyssa had seen her worse, anyway.
Her glasses pressed uncomfortably against her face, but she made no move to take them off. She reached for her phone and read the new texts from Alyssa.
From ‘my gay girlfriend’ (8:22 am)
good thing you love me so much <3
see you in a few
Emma turned her phone off without replying to the texts. She let her eye’s fall shut again while she waited for her girlfriend to arrive. Sure enough, a few moments later Emma heard the sound of the front door opening and closing downstairs. She could hear two muffled voices talking, presumably Alyssa and her grandma, before she heard Alyssa racing up the stairs. The door to Emma’s room flung open as Alyssa burst in.
“Morning, sunshine!” Alyssa yelled with way too much cheer than anyone should have at eight in the morning.
Emma groaned and buried her head under the covers. “Just let me sleep.”
Alyssa hummed in faux consideration before saying “Nope!”
“I hate you.” Emma poked the top of her head out from under the blankets so she could glare at Alyssa.
“No you don’t.” Alyssa set the bag in her hand down on the floor before walking to Emma’s bed and sitting down. She kissed the top of Emma’s head, causing Emma to pull the blankets over her nose so Alyssa couldn’t see her smile.
“What’s the bag for?”, Emma asked, her voice slightly muffled from the blanket.
“Glad you asked. We,” Alyssa smiled, “are making bread today.”
“We are?”
“Yup. Whole grain as we have decided it is the superior bread type.”
“Yeah, yeah”, Emma grumbled. They had settled the Great Bread Debate a while ago, but Emma still held some bitterness about the verdict.
Alyssa laughed. “Can you at least pretend to be excited to see me? I had to beg my mom for so long to let me leave the house when I should be preparing for Bible Camp or whatever.”
Emma felt her features soften as she sat up. She threw her arms around Alyssa so she was hugging her from behind. She snuggled her head into Alyssa’s shoulder. “I am excited to see you, I’m just tired. I’m sorry.”
Alyssa leaned further into her girlfriend and giggled. “I know you’re grumpy in the mornings, it’s fine.”
Emma scoffed and slapped Alyssa’s shoulder playfully. Alyssa just laughed again and turned slightly in Emma’s grasp so she could kiss the other girl. Emma happily reciprocated.
“You have morning breath”, Alyssa teased when they broke apart.
“You’re rude”, Emma replied as she snuggled back into Alyssa’s shoulder. “Where does your mom think you are?”
“Bookstore. It’s not my best excuse, but she seemed to believe it.”
Emma hummed in acknowledgement. “When do you have to be back home?”
“No later than one, I think she’d get suspicious after that.” Alyssa leaned back further into Emma. “Plenty of time to make bread.”
Emma laughed into Alyssa’s shoulder. “Enough time to stay in bed and cuddle for a while?”, she asked hopefully.
Alyssa turned around to see Emma’s puppy dog eyes. “You can’t use the puppy eyes on me! I’m immune.”
“Are you sure?” Emma batted her eyelashes more dramatically.
Alyssa groaned loudly in fake annoyance. She kicked off her shoes and scooted herself up on the bed. She grasped Emma’s hands in her own and fell back on the bed, bringing Emma with her.
Emma laughed in surprise as she fell on top of Alyssa. “Is that a yes to cuddling?”
Alyssa rolled her eyes. “Yes, now go to sleep.” Alyssa wrapped her arms around Emma in a hug and pulled her closer.
Emma tangled their legs together as she yawned. She buried her face into Alyssa’s neck and breathed in. “I’m gonna miss you when you’re at Bible Camp”, Emma mumbled.
“I’ll miss you too”, Alyssa said before she placed another kiss on the top of Emma’s head.
Emma’s lips stretched into a smile. She let her eyes fall shut as Alyssa slid her glasses off her face and carefully placed them onto Emma’s nightstand. She could feel herself drifting off already.
Alyssa made Emma happier than she could have ever thought. Part of her used to wonder if it was just the honeymoon phase at the beginning of their relationship that made her so happy. After over half a year of dating, Emma was glad to say that wasn’t the case. No, things weren’t always perfect. They had fights on occasion and they had to hide their relationship, which is a lot easier said than done. Even with the roadblocks, Emma couldn’t ask for anything more.
And to neither of the girls knowledge, next year four Broadway stars and their PR manager would come to Edgewater, Indiana and turn their whole lives upside down and allow them to live freely. But for now, Emma was completely content with simply cuddling with the love of her life before making bread.
Yeah, Emma thought as she somehow sleepily snuggled further into Alyssa, This is more than enough.
