Rose was the first one to get out of the car. She was jumping around to show her excitement.
The rest of the family wasn’t that excited.
Emily grabbed the bags from the trunk. “I can’t believe you actually convinced me to go with you. It was supposed to be your year. And you didn’t come with me last year”
“Em, I had pushed an entire human out of my vagina less than a month prior, you had no power over me” JJ smiled, satisfied with her answer.
Emily rolled her eyes. The whole family went inside the store, it was everything JJ and Emily hated. Entire families fighting over the kind of notebooks they had to buy, children crying because they couldn’t have the last Barbie backpack, and exhausted parents trying to get it over with.
“We should have done this last month” said JJ
“That’s what we say every year”
“Well, next year we will”
“Absolutely” sait Emily, knowing perfectly that it would never happen.
JJ stopped in a corner of the store so that they wouldn’t bother anyone.
“So, let’s be methodical. Emily, you’re taking Rose and I’m taking Henry and Casey. Let’s divide and conquer, so that we can be out of here soon”
The whole family agreed. They parted ways, trying to walk as fast as they could. Henry was holding his list of supplies. They walked through the isles, grabbing every items on the list.
“Okay, now we need a 2H and 2B pencil.”
“What is that?” said JJ, frowning.
“The art teacher said that it was important for us to have these, apparently the B pencils are darker and softer and the H pencils are harder and lighter.”
“How are we gonna find that?”
It took them more than twenty minutes to finally find them. Rose and Emily were already done, and were looking for them. They all met in the pen and notebooks alley.
“So? Are we done?”
“Absolutely” said JJ, glad that they had finally found everything. She looked at her watch and said “Forty-five minutes, I think it’s a record for the Prentiss-Jareau family”.
“Wait” said Henry, stopping.
“Don’t tell me we have to find another pencil, because I’m gonna arrest your art teacher.”
“No, it’s not that.”
He grabbed a pen. It was a pink unicorn pen.
“Oh, is it a gift for you godmother?” asked JJ “She’s gonna love it”
Henry started blushing, slightly embarrassed. “Actually...It’s for Angie”.
A huge smile appeared on his mothers’ faces. They both exchanged a look, trying not to melt.
“That’s very nice. Although you should still take one for Penelope, she’d be really excited”
“Sure” Henry smiled, glad that his mothers didn’t say anything more about Angie. He was still not ready to talk about her more than he had already done during the hike.
Rose turned around and saw a notebook with math equations on it. She was too small to grab it so she tugged on Emily’s sleeve. She pointed at the notebook. “Mom, can you take that for me? I want to give it to uncle Spencer, please please please please please”.
She didn’t even have to use her puppy eyes for her mom to take the notebook. “Of course, he’ll love it” said Emily. “So? Can we go now?”
