Hot Chocolate and Marshmallows

Chapter 2: Marshmallows

Chapter Text

“Oh, hello Homura! It’s nice to meet you.” Madoka smiled.

.

She felt bad for the transfer student. Despite the fact that Homura felt a little cold, and cool, Madoka couldn't help but feel a strong connection to her. Something was pulling them together.

.

"Why wouldn't she want me to make a contract with Kyubey... She hasn’t given me any reason..."

.

Madoka had never gone to the cafe near school. She'd been to others, but not this one. However, one day, as she saw Homura's figure entering the building, something compelled her to go inside.

.

"Hello! Can I get... um... a hot chocolate?"

"White chocolate or milk chocolate?"

"Hmm... White! With extra marshmallows!"

.

Madoka grabbed the cup and looked around at the tables. She spotted a figure with long, black hair facing away from her in a booth to the back. Something told her that this was Homura.

.

Homura's eyes widened and she jumped slightly as Madoka appeared from the side.

"Oh, I'm sorry! Did I startle you?"

"...No, no it's okay."

She set her tray down, then took a seat.

"This is a cute little shop! How did you find out about it? I've been going to this school longer than you and I didn't even know about it."

Homura hesitated before answering.

"I just... Stumbled into it a while ago, I guess."

.

They sat in silence for a while. Homura held her mostly empty mug in her hands, and Madoka took sips of her hot chocolate, smiling and giggling as the marshmallows bobbed up and down, occasionally hitting her in the nose when she tipped the cup back too far.

She broke the silence. "We got the same thing!" Madoka lifted her body out of her chair a bit, leaning over the table to peer into Homura’s cup. "But it looks like you only got whipped cream. You should really try and get marshmallows next time. They're extra fun!"

Madoka was chattering away.

She didn't know why, but she felt... compelled to talk. Compelled to follow Homura here, to order a drink, to sit down. For the past couple weeks, she's suddenly felt these strong compulsions, and she didn't know why. It just felt... right to listen to them. To do what they said.

Homura had finished her drink a while ago, and occasionally peeked up to look at Madoka.

"I'm sorry, this is weird isn’t it? I just sort of followed you in the building when I saw another student going inside. Did you have something to do? I can leave if you-"

"No!" Homura interrupted with a strength and urgency Madoka had not yet seen, but found... familiar. "I mean, no. You can stay if you want. I'm just a little lost in thought."

"That's okay," Madoka smiled, "I do that too. Sometimes it's just nice to sit with someone, even if you don't know them that well."

Homura’s lips tightened, almost imperceptibly, but Madoka noticed. No, she didn't notice, she just... knew.

"I don't think we're strangers or anything! I think," she smiled widely, tilting her head to the side, "we're gonna make great friends."

.

“Madoka! Stop, don’t—“

“It’s okay, Homura. I want to help you.”

.

Madoka laid on the ground. Her breathing slowed.

.

“It’s okay, Homura! I know you said that wishing isn’t good, but it was worth it. I knew... I knew we were gonna be...”

.

She grabbed her tray and walked to the back of the cafe, sitting down across from Homura.

"Wow, we got the same thing! Hot chocolate with whipped cream and extra marshmallows! They're-"

"They're extra fun," Homura said with a soft smile.

Notes:

InfinityIllusion and I exchanged prompts for a 12 Days of Christmas fic exchange! They very diligently posted a fic a day for twelve days and... well, I clearly didn't do that!
