You Tell Me

Chapter Text

The cool air rushes through Kara's hair as she speedwalks through the town to her apartment with her fists clenched and blood flowing through her face. "How dare he claim that Supergirl might've hurt Lena, he hasn't even met her!" Kara mutters through gritted teeth. Suddenly, in her frustrated state, she goes crashing to the floor, luckily though, her razor-sharp reflexes kick in just in time for her to lessen the blow so she didn't make a crater in the tar and reveal her identity.

"Woah! You okay?" Someone asks as they grab Kara's hand to help her up.

"I'm- I- 'm fine, thank you," Kara replies hastily more frustrated than before.

"Kara?" Kara stares at the girl with an inquisitive face trying to figure out who she was. All she could figure out was that she was most likely a teen.

"I'm sorry, have we met before?" Kara asks unsure of how this teenager knows her name.

"Oh, no, we haven't, no. I just read a lot of your articles for Cat-Co and you inspire me so much." The teen replied making Kara smile and fill her heart with warmth.

"Awe, that's so sweet, always happy to meet someone who likes my work!"

"I aspire to be like you Miss Danvers, you're such an inspiration for women and the LGBTQ+ community and-" Kara cuts her off mid-sentence as she was taken aback.

"I'm sorry, did you say the LGBTQ community?"

"Yeah!"

"I- I'm not gay!"

"You're..you're not?"

"Between you and me, I don't know if I'm into girls or boys all I know is that there is one girl in my life and I intend to keep her," Kara explains. "I haven't told family nor friends yet so I hope we can keep this between ourselves, alright?" Kara whispers practically begging.

"I know how it feels to be outed, it's not great, I wouldn't want my idol to feel like that too." The teen replies. "I'm Lucy-Rose by the way, you can call my Rose."

"It was really nice meeting you Rose," Kara tells her as she places her hand on her arms squeezing it lightly.

"Nice to meet you too Miss Danvers, it's such an honour."

"Nonsense...actually Rose, would you be willing to do something for me?" Kara asks a new story popping into her head.

"Of course, what do you need?" Rose eagerly replies.

"Can you get a group of LGBT+ teens who are comfortable talking about their coming out experience, please? I know it'll be hard but here is my card." Kara tells her whilst patting all the pockets till she finds her card and hands it to Rose. "If you want you can tell them that it's for me and if they have any questions they call give me a ring," Kara explains. "Rose you don't be shy to message either, any problems, need anything you let me know."

"Of course I can do that miss Danvers! I'll just ask the admin of your fan account to post it, I'm sure they'll be a lot of us. Age range fourteen-twenty, and like twelve of us...from different backgrounds and ethnicities I'm guessing..."

"Perfect! I cannot thank you enough! And please call me Kara, Rose."

"Of course Kara! I'll contact you in a bit with the group!" Rose tells Kara excitedly. "Bye Kara!" Rose says quickly before rushing off!

"Bye!" Kara says in a whisper knowing no matter how loud she shouted the teenage girl was way out of earshot now. She pats her back pockets for her phone and slides it out. She messaged Alex and waits for a response before jumping into an ally to change into her super-suit.

She blasts through the sky and lands on the helipad of the DEO. Suddenly all her anxiety, anger and frustration was flowing in her veins again and her breathing becomes shaky when she lifts her hand to knock on the office door. She knocks exactly three times and on the third knock, the door swings open and the detective is at the door. "Well hello Detective Stone, I heard you needed me, what for sir?"

"I just want to ask you a few questions if that is not a problem with you Supergirl." The detective explains calmly and gestures to the chairs so that Kara could take a seat.

"You were the one to bring in Miss Luthor, right?"

"Yes sir, Kara Danvers called me and said she needed help and she didn't know what to do," Kara tells him. Technically she's not lying, she didn't know what to do so she changed into Supergirl and brought her to the DEO for inspection.

"Okay. Why did you bring her here instead of to a normal hospital?" The detective quizzes.

"Normal hospitals do not have the facilities that the DEO has and someone as much of an influencer as  Miss Luthor needs treatment as soon as possible to reduce the risk of...you know...death."

"Fair point. Kara mentioned Lex Luthor appearing in her house-"

"Yes, she told me about it."

"Do you think that he has anything to do with this?"

"The fact that he came up as soon as Lena got sick doesn't help his cause," Kara replies knowing that the detective is smart enough to realise that she does.

"Where were you when Kara called you for help?" The detective suspiciously asks.

"Fort Rozz, talking to Superman about his mother." Kara calmly replies. "Superman is my cousin...I'm older than him." The detective looks at her with a confused face. "Seriously, this is all known information," Kara tells him.

"Supergirl, I have no doubt that it was Lex who harmed Lena. Now we need to catch him to figure out how to help her." Detective Stone reassures Kara. She takes in a deep breath.

"Detective, it is possible, may I help catch Lex? I think I have the perfect plan." The detective ponders on the question and gives Supergirl the look she has been waiting for.

****************

Kara stands in the middle of her apartment awaiting Lex to appear again. Only...it wasn't Kara...it's J'onn J'onzz shapeshifted into Kara.

"Kara." Lex's voice echoes in the apartment? "Why have you summoned me here?"

"I want to know what you did to Lena. And why." J'onn demands.

"Why so eager Kara?" Lex smugly asks as he takes a couple of septs towards her. J'onn thinks on the spot and takes a few steps back with Lex. "Are you afraid of me?"

"Never."

"Then why move away?" Lex quizzes.

"Because I don't know you. I have no reason to trust you. Not even your sister does." J'onn replies. Silence fills the room for a moment and then Lex moves round to the sofa and makes himself comfortable on Lena's favourite seat. Kara who is watching with x-ray-vision boils up at the sight but keeps her cool.

"Let's get down to business then, shall we?" Lex says gesturing to the seat in front of him prompting j'onn to sit there. Kara however who is sitting outside tries to hold herself back from carrying on the song from Mulan, which somehow calms her down.

"Tell me what you did to Lena." J'onn demands again.

"If I told you...I'd have to wipe your memory, I can't have you spoiling my experiment. I've been working on it since I was seventeen. Lena has a remarkable immune system you know." Lex tells him.

"How do I help Lena. What did you do to her?" J'onn says raising his voice a little.

"Stay calm, Supergirl. You'll get nowhere with raising your voice." Lex says as he brings out a few papers. "This here has everything you need to know, but once you read this I will have to kill you."

"Oh please, I can kill you with my pinkies Lex," J'onn says feeling confident but then Lex pulls out a piece of kryptonite. J'onn knew that his cover would be blown if the kryptonite didn't affect him. He shoots up and out of the window. Kara gets the gist and shoots up as well.

J'onn transforms and flies into the apartment grabbing lex by the neck unexpectedly. This is the perfect opportunity to pull the kryptonite out of his hand. He pulls it out, a piece getting stuck in Lex's hand.

J'onn grabs the papers from the desk and flies out with them landing in the DEO. Kara flies in and punches Lex in the face almost knocking him out but he grabs her by the neck and the kryptonite affects her immediately.

She coughs blood on Lex's face and he grabs her neck tighter. "Why are you doing this?" Kara struggles to say.

"BECAUSE MY SISTER IS A FREAK! SHE IS A TEST SUBJECT. NOTHING CAN CHANGE THAT!" He shouts and slams Kara through the wall. Gravity gets a hold of her and she starts plummeting downwards towards the floor quickly and she is too out of it to enable her powers.

Sirens. Ambulance. Police. Firetrucks. That is all that Kara can hear. Everything else is silent to her. She can't hear her sister's desperate cries for her to wake up. She can't hear her friends calling her name. She can't hear the blood dripping into the pool right beside her ear or the desperate banging of her adoptive mother's hands on the floor.

Dry tongue pressed against the roof of her mouth. The tar of the road beneath her fingertips. The wind on her nose. A stray hair across her face. That's all she can feel. She can't feel the pool of warm blood underneath her head that her hair is soaking in. She can't feel the glass wedged deep into her tanned skin. She can't feel her sister banging her fists on her chest.

Burnt rubber. Sterilisation liquid. Grass. She can smell the grass that has grown in the cracks of the tiles. She can't smell her sisters' perfume. She can't smell the blood on her sister's hands. She can't smell the burning wood from the fire coming from her apartment. She can't smell the antibiotic spray on her cuts and wounds.

Mint. She can taste the minty toothpaste she used to brush her teeth. She can't taste the blood that's gathering in the back of her throat though. Darkness. That's all she see's. Not the flashlight that is being shined in her eyes. She can't see her family in pieces around her. She can't see the flashing lights of the emergency service vehicles.

Alex stares at her sister's lifeless body. Stares at the blood that has pooled under her head, staining her hair red. She stares at the green glowing veins on her face. Stares at the wound on her neck. Stares at the cuts and gashes from the glass surrounding them. Then she realises...she realises she broke the promise to her father, to her mother. She promised she'd protect Kara and she didn't. Now her little sister is dead in her arms.

"I SHOULD'VE FRICKING CAUGHT YOU! I should've caught you! Why didn't I catch you?" Alex sobs into her sister's chest. "I shouldn't have let you go into that room with Lex." Alex ponders on her thought for a second before coming to a realisation. "It's my fault. IT'S MY FUCKING FAULT!" She screams and bangs the floor with her fists causing them to bleed. Then screams it out again bashing the floor with her fists. She does it again and screams in agony each time. Then she does it again, and again, and again screaming from the top of her lungs.

"ALEX STOP! Stop Alex!" Nia screams as she runs towards Alex kneeling beside her. "Stop." She repeats and takes hold of Alex's bloodied up fists. Alex turns towards Nia and breaks down in tears. "It's okay. It's okay. Let it out." Alex's wails of regret, anger, frustration and suffering fills everyone's ears. Quietly and slowly the mother extends her arms around her only daughter and her dead daughter's best friend as tears of sadness trickle down her face as well.

They sit there for hours. Just staring at her...staring at how peaceful she looks. Neither one of them thought that this was how it would end. But then Alex comes to a revelation. If her veins are glowing green, and there is kryptonite in her neck, then she just had to look for the piece and take it out, then everything would be okay.

She scrambles out from the hug and pounces on her sister, gripping her neck feeling for the glowing green stone. Soon enough her finger traces over a hard piece in her sister's neck and she starts to pry out the piece. "GET THE SUN LAMPS! ASAP!" She shouts over the blaring alarms. Finally, she sees the tip of the rock poke through the cut and she probes it harder. Suddenly the splinter-like stone falls out into the blood. Alex waits a moment only to realise that her sister is still not breathing. "LAMPS! WHERE ARE THE LAMPS?" She cries desperately. "She needs sunlight. Plant's have sunlight. GET ME SOME PLANTS!" She figures. Suddenly there is a hand on her back.

"Alex, stop, she's...she's gone." Her mother tells her. "Leave her in peace."

"NO! NO! SHE NEEDS THE SUN, SHE NEEDS PLANTS, PLANTS HAVE SUNLIGHT." She shouts back. "I can bring her back. I've got to bring her back." She cries scrambling around for some flowers that are growing out of the cracks in the floor. Her mother pulls her back but she releases herself from the grip and presses the flowers into Kara's hand. "Take it. Take the sun. TAKE THE SUN." The sunlamps are rolled towards her and she gets up and places them around Kara shining them the brightest they would go. Now Kara's life is a waiting game, will she come back?
