Chapter Text
It doesn’t take long for Saiki to procure a mobile phone; he simply uses the money he was going to use to purchase the game. He did not want to get into a discussion on why he, as a high school student, didn’t own a phone. He didn’t think dropping the ‘I don’t need one because I am psychic’ would go down very well. Especially with someone like Makoto Teruhashi who had a little habit of throwing things out of proportion at times. No, it was better to simply pretend he had one all the while.
It didn’t take him long to set the device up, nor to input Makoto’s phone number in before he finds a quiet alley to teleport back home. Waving hello to his mother, Saiki makes his way up the stairs to his room in order to send a quick text to Makoto and hope that none of his daily annoyances would decide to pop round to ‘hang out’ today.
*Makoto, this is Kusuo.*
*Kusuo! I was starting to think you weren’t going to message me.*
*I wouldn’t want to ignore you when we have a date later.*
*I can’t wait. I will message you when I am finished. I will pick you up at your house?*
*Okay. I will see you later.*
He allows a small smile to shape his features at the short conversation. Honestly, it was a hassle to spend time typing out what he wanted to say instead of just projecting his thoughts directly into someone’s head, but he supposes he couldn’t do that with Makoto, not when the actor didn’t know about his powers. Saiki had to admit that this was a convenient way for him to get in contact with other’s when he wasn’t in range to use his telepathy to merely project his words. He didn’t need anyone getting suspicious of him. Though, now that he thinks about it, he wonders why none of his so-called friends at school ever asked for his mobile number.
Spending the rest of his morning lounging around his bedroom, figuring out some of the features on his new phone, it wouldn’t do much good if it looked like he didn’t know how to use the thing in front of Makoto. He entertains himself by erecting various scenarios of Teruhashi’s reaction to her figuring out that he was now dating her older brother. That he would never say ‘oh wow’ to her and that he didn’t like her as she thought he did. It was a bit insensitive of him, but he had grown tiresome of trying to evade her constant attempts at cornering him into satisfying her own selfish gains.
*Hey Kusuo. I am on my way.*
Shuffling to the end of his bed, Saiki cannot deny the flurry of butterflies that explodes in his stomach at the thought of actually going on a date with Makoto. He quickly changes his clothes into something more appropriate for an outing with the idol and ties his shoes.
The doorbell echoed through his house and Saiki sighs when he hears his mother making her way down the hall, he would be lucky to escape the commotion she is sure to make when Makoto informs her that he is here to pick him up for their date.
“Hello?”
“Ah, Mrs Saiki. I am here to pick up Saiki.”
“Oh, yes I will just go get him. Would you like to come in for a moment?”
Saiki shakes his head when he hears Makoto accepting his Mother’s offer. It would be rude if he tried to usher the other out of his house now. Making his way down the stairs, Saiki allows a small smile to lift the corner of his lips when he sees the other standing in the hallway.
“Ah, Ku-chan. Your friend is here to see you.”
Yes, we are going out.
“Oh, Ku-chan. I am so happy for you. You have so many friends now!”
‘I wonder if Kusuo would mind if I told his mum. I mean we haven’t actually been on a date yet, maybe it is too presumptuous of me to tell her we are dating…’
Makoto isn’t my friend, mum. He is my boyfriend. We are going out on a date.
‘Oh my gosh. He just came out and said it. I am so happy.’
Saiki smiles over at Makoto, walking over to the idol, Saiki slips his hand into the other’s and begins to pull his date over to the front door. He didn’t really wish to hang around for his mum to break herself out of her stupor. Her thoughts jumbled as she tries to make sense of what her anti-social, loner son just told her.
Come on, Makoto. There is a really good café a short walk away. You don’t mind walking, do you?
“No, I don’t mind at all.”
‘It means I get to spend more time with you.’
Saiki blushes, tightening his hand around Makoto’s as he leads him down the road to Café Mami praying that Mera wasn’t working today. He didn’t mind people knowing that he was dating the popular idol, despite all the attention it is going to bring him, but he knew that Mera would spread it around the school faster than he can teleport home.
Guiding Makoto through the aisles, Saiki leads the older boy to his usual seat and feels himself relaxing when he doesn’t hear Mera’s thoughts in his range. Saiki sighs when Makoto releases his hand in order to pick up his menu, scouring the options available as they wait for one of the servers to come over to take their order.
Saiki takes the moment to study Makoto, blinking rapidly to reset his x-ray vision as his eyes trail down the other’s form. He could see why he was really popular with the women now, his build was slight but muscled. His hair framed his face, complimenting his complexion and eyes. His hands, unlike his sisters, were calloused, yet still soft to the touch indicating hard work and dedication to skincare.
‘I wonder if Kusuo is okay, he has been staring at me since we sat down. Is he not going to order anything?’
Saiki rolls his eyes inwardly at the worry coating Makoto’s thoughts, he blinks again resetting his x-ray vision once more before smiling over at his date.
See anything that you want to order?
“Hmmm? Oh, yea, this chocolate sundae looks really nice, I was thinking of getting that. What about you Kusuo?”
A Coffee Jelly and a cup of coffee with cream on the side.
‘He must really love coffee jelly; he was always eating it whenever I stopped round before. I wonder if he would mind me buying him some as a gift some time.’
“You really like coffee jelly. I wonder if it is any good.”
Coffee Jelly is the best dessert, nay the best food in the world.
“Ahahaha. I didn’t realise you had such a sweet tooth, Kusuo. It is kinda adorable.”
‘Was that weird to say? Did that come off as stupid? Gosh, I bet he is going to hate me now.’
Adorable?
“What I meant was, you are always so stoic and socially awkward. Not that that is a bad thing, that’s not what I meant. It is just really unexpected is all. But I guess it sort of suits you as well.”
Thank you.
“Hiya, are you two ready to order?”
‘Oh my gosh, is that Tooru Mugami? I can’t believe he is sitting in my café. This is the best day ever!’
Saiki sighs quietly, frowning up at the waitress who is staring at his date a gleam shining in her eyes making an uncomfortable burn rise in his chest. Saiki didn’t like this waitress at all. He reals off their combined order to the woman in hopes of sending her away quicker.
“Saiki, are you alright?”
‘He seems a little out of sorts now. I wonder if I did anything to make him upset.’
I am alright. I just didn’t like how that waitress was staring at you. She recognised you.
‘He was jealous. I can’t believe Kusuo is jealous, that is so cute. He must like me back then, I mean obviously, he likes me back he invited me out on a date after all, but it is really nice to know it for definite.’
“Do you want to leave? I don’t mind if them knowing about me makes you feel uncomfortable.”
No, it is alright. I don’t mind as long as she doesn’t get in the way of our date.
Saiki smiles, eyes shining behind his green-tinted glasses. He didn’t know he was the type of person to get jealous so easily, but he guesses it is bound to happen, seen as he can hear peoples innermost thoughts. It would have been easier to ignore the woman if he hadn’t had to listen to her squealing thoughts about his date.
‘My heart is beating so fast.’
Makoto smiles back at Saiki, reaching his hand across the table to slip his fingers between his date’s, his expression softening that much more when Saiki tightens his grip in return. Silence befalls their table before Saiki catches the sound of a familiar train of thought coming closer to them. Glancing out the window for a moment, Saiki feels himself slumping down in his seat.
Your Sister is about to walk in.
“Kokomi? What is she doing here?”
I have no idea, but you know she is going to want to sit with us.
Saiki wouldn’t ever admit out loud that he is feeling disappointment coursing through his veins at the thought of Teruhashi crashing their date. Sinking into his thoughts on how they could potentially get rid of the annoyance, Saiki is therefore shaken out of his mind when the cushion he is sitting on shifts under someone else’s weight. Glancing up a blush dusts his cheeks.
“You don’t mind? It’s just, at least this way she won’t be able to sit next to either of us. Maybe she will get the hint and leave us alone…”
You don’t want her to stay?
“No, as crazy as it sounds, I don’t want her here. I want to spend this time alone with you.”
Thank you, Makoto. That is really sweet of you.
Saiki smiles, letting some of his tension bleed from his shoulders as he cautiously leans into Makoto’s side.
Is this okay?
‘Oh my gosh, Saiki is cuddling with me. This feels so nice. I don’t want him to pull away. I wonder if he would mind staying like this for a while.’
“No, I don’t mind at all.”
Makoto takes a deep breath, holding it as he carefully slips his arm around Saiki’s shoulders drawing the younger male tighter into his side. Only releasing the breath when he feels the other relaxing further into his embrace, head resting against his shoulder. And that is how Teruhashi finds then as she makes her way through the empty café.
‘Hehe. I know this is where Saiki spends most of his free time when he is not hanging out with Nendo or Kaidou. I bet I would just make his day when I turn up and offer to keep him compa-’
“Brother…? What are you doing here?”
“Kokomi… ummm… well you see…”
‘I don’t know what to say to her now. I can’t just come out and say that I am on a date with Kusuo, but I don’t want to hurt her feelings either. I know she likes Kusuo as well. Maybe I should let Kusuo handle this…’
Saiki rolls his eyes, glancing up at Teruhashi as best as he can from his position resting against Makoto.
He is here because I invited him to join me.
‘Oh if that is all- Wait, why would Saiki invite my creepy brother of all people to accompany him to a café. I am clearly the better choice. Stupid brother.’
“Oh, you wouldn’t mind if I joined you, would you brother?”
“Ummm, well…”
Makoto glances down at Saiki, seeing the other shake his head a little, he sighs. He knows that Saiki wasn’t like the rest of the shallow-minded simpletons who surround his sister every day but he also knows that Saiki is well aware of Kokomi’s narcissistic tendencies. Unsure how Saiki came across such information, Makoto squeezes Saiki’s shoulders in reassurance. The pair only relaxes when Teruhashi takes a seat on the empty bench opposite them just as their waitress walks back over with their order.
‘Damn brother, does he have to sit so close to Saiki.’
“Oh, you guys have already ordered. What did you get Saiki? That looks really nice. I think I will have the same thing please.”
Teruhashi places her order with the waitress before the others can get a word in edgewise, something which irks Saiki to no end. Though he keeps his mouth closed when Makoto pushes his plate of coffee jelly, his cream and his coffee over to him.
“Here, Kusuo.”
Thank you, Makoto.
Saiki uses his left hand to scoop up some of his jelly, eyes closing in bliss, a blush dusting his cheeks as he sighs around the flavour exploding across his tongue. He would never get over the delectable taste of coffee jelly.
‘Kusuo? Since when have they been close enough to call each other by their first names. Saiki hasn’t even given me permission to use his first name yet!’
“Oh, this chocolate cake is actually really nice, here Kusuo would you like to try a bit?”
Teruhashi silently fumes as she watches her older brother offering a forkful of the chocolatey dessert to her Saiki. She plasters a bright smile on her face as she watches the blissful expression shaping Saiki’s features as he silently accepts the treat with a small smile and blush.
‘What is going on here? Why does this feel like a date? At least I know Saiki enough to know that he would never willingly share his own dessert wit-’
Saiki smirks inwardly as he scoops a small amount of his coffee jelly onto his spoon and offers the dessert up to Makoto who simply stares down at him in wonderment. Even he knows just how much Saiki adored his coffee jelly and for him to offer it up willingly was baffling to the older male.
‘Kusuo is offering me some of his jelly. This must mean he does like me, more than I thought he did in any case. This can’t actually be happening. But it is. I need to accept before he gets the wrong idea.’
“Thank you, Saiki. This is delicious. I can see why you like it so much.”
Coffee Jelly is and always will be the greatest dessert ever invented.
Makoto chuckles at Saiki’s words, moving to drop a chaste kiss to the other boy’s head before he can fully think through his actions. Freezing in place for a moment, Makoto only allows some of the tension to dissipate when Saiki smiles up at him, relaxing against his side fully. Though their moment of tranquil bliss is shattered by a shout of alarm.
“What on earth do you think you are doing?”
“Kokomi? What do you mean?”
“I can’t believe you just kissed Saiki, my Saiki and who gave you the right to use his first name. It isn’t like the two of you are dating at all. Why are you trying to take him away from me!”
Makoto sits back, dropping his fork to his plate as he stares up at his sister in surprise. He had never expected Kokomi to lose her cool so quickly and without thinking about her surroundings and the effect it would have on her reputation. Luckily for her, this was quite a quiet café and they were the only customers at the moment. He tightens his arm around Saiki’s shoulders, offering what comfort he could while also absorbing all the comfort he could.
Saiki merely raises an eyebrow at his classmate, he honestly didn’t expect her to voice her inner thoughts out loud like this, especially for her brother to hear, but then again, they had basically been ignoring the girl the entire time. Not that anyone could blame them, Teruhashi was so lost within her own fantasy that she believes she has the right to do whatever she wants without repercussions. Saiki honestly couldn’t stand that about the girl.
First of all Teruhashi, I am not your Saiki. Nor do I appreciate you sabotaging my life on a day-to-day basis just to hear me say ‘oh wow’ to you. Secondly, Makoto has my permission to call me by my last name and to kiss me whenever he wishes because he is my boyfriend and that is what boyfriends do. Finally, Makoto is not trying to take me away from you at all because I never belonged to you nor do you have a claim over me. I am dating Makoto because I like him. You are the one who forced themselves on our date.
The table descends into silence after Saiki’s words. He is not proud of saying all of that, he didn’t want to hurt Teruhashi’s feelings, nor did he want her to sick her Kokomins on him, but she needed to learn that not everything in life could go her way. That she manipulates everyone around her without there being some form of ramifications. She was an alright classmate when she wasn’t trying to get him to gasp at her for walking down a corridor, but her obsession with him was getting on his last nerve.
He glances up at Makoto wondering if the other would dislike him now because of the hurtful words he said to his little sister. He is surprised to find Makoto smiling down at him with a little awe and adoration in his eyes. It wasn’t an expression he is used to seeing being directed at him, not unless you counted by his mother. The expression causes his stomach to flip and his cheeks to heat up.
‘I can’t believe Kusuo would say all that to Kokomi. I mean I was thinking the same things, but I definitely don’t have to courage to say that to her face. Kusuo is so brave, he really is amazing. I can’t believe he actually offered to take me on a date. I kind of do feel sorry for Kokomi though, I technically did ‘steal’ Saiki from her.’
I am sorry if what I said hurt you Teruhashi, but you need to stop. Honestly, all of your schemes and plots to make me say ‘oh wow’ are annoying. You have everyone else in the school fawning over you, do you really need one insignificant person like me as well?
‘I didn’t know Saiki knew what I was doing this entire time. It makes sense now why he would never say it to me if he knew that is the only reason behind me wanting to spend time with him. I really should apologise to Saiki, and my brother.’
“It should be me who I apologising to you, Saiki. I am really sorry that my behaviour has caused trouble for you. I will ask that our classmates leave you alone as well because I know they have been disrupting your day as well because of me. I am sorry as well, brother. I didn’t mean to say such mean things to you and I am sorry for interrupting your date.”
With that said, Teruhashi bows to the pair and turns to make her way back out of the café without a backwards glance leaving her untouched drink and dessert on the table for the pair to share. Their date finally falls back into place as Saiki snuggles back against Makoto allowing the older male to feed him his coffee jelly. Relaxing in each other presence completely, letting the world fade away around them.
