Chapter Text
The warm summer breeze blew lightly past the two boys sitting on the large meadow in front of the residential area they were living in. The soothing wind wafted through their hair, causing Kai to wipe away the single hair strand that fell in Beomgyu's face. Beomgyu only looked at him with big eyes without saying anything to it while Kai touched his face carefully.
The sky got soaked in bright colors, slathered like a painting with infinite glow. The colors above them brought this place the missing glimmer it lacked, showing off the beauty it can bring in the evening. It felt like only the two of them knew of the hidden charm of this place they called home.
Kai could feel the grass on the palm of his hand and sensed their coldness as he leaned his weight on it. The meadow always felt soft and comfortable to lay in. Always softer when Beomgyu laid beside him.
"How long are you going to stare at me like that?" Beomgyu asked with a teasing tone, smiling as he called Kai out. Kai grinned at his sudden question, the corner of his lips going up as the other stayed at its place.
"I'm gonna stop staring." Kai answered with the same teasing tone and let himself fall back into the grass, closing his eyes as he made himself comfortable. Kai only heard a small whispering sound from Beomgyu and he knew exactly that Beomgyu looked at him with puppy-like eyes right now. He grinned at this thought.
Beomgyu soon finished sulking at Kai and turned his attention to something else. Kai enjoyed the sunset shining on his skin, feeling the light stroking over his face.
"Hueningie."
"Hm?"
"Open your eyes." Kai opened only one eye, glimpsing above himself as he saw a big grasshopper in Beomgyu's hands, his little legs moving around in panic.
"Look at the grasshopper!" Beomgyu exclaimed excitedly and proudly showed off the grasshopper with a bright smile on his face, wiggling it in front of Kai's face full of joy.
"Don't touch it." Kai exclaimed louder and quickly moved up from his lying position as he grabbed Beomgyu's arm and pushed it away from his face. Beomgyu laughed at this sight with his full voice and it almost sounded as if he was yelling at Kai with all the joy he had in his chest. Kai couldn't be mad at him for long. Beomgyu's laugh made his chest feel like a butterfly hideout.
"You are such a scaredy cat." Beomgyu laughed at him and held his hand to his chest, unable to breathe properly.
"Ya! You were the one who screamed like a child when Pancake jumped on your bed!"
"I didn't know he was there! He just walked in my room like a ninja." Beomgyu tried defending himself miserably and flailed his hands around. Kai chuckled amused, his bright gaze let Beomgyu feel at ease and he smiled back with the same amusement.
"Yeah and he attacked you with cuddles, sure."
"He is as much of a menace than your tons of plushies."
"You are just jealous that they can sleep next to me every night." Kai claimed and leaned his head a little towards Beomgyu to emphasize his teasing.
"No, I'm not. W-Wait- You are always sleeping on my bed." Beomgyu furrowed his brows in confusion and pointed straight at Kai with his finger.
"No, I don't." Kai said in defense and looked away in realization.
"You are!" Beomgyu exclaimed and wiggled his hand in front of Kai's face and smiled in joy. Kai ignored Beomgyu and looked up, mesmerized by the pink clouds that filled the sky and matched with the blue that was getting darker and darker with every passing minute.
Beomgyu dropped the teasing and also focused on the sunset, just as Kai did. The silence came over them and the only thing that could be heard was the wind that brushed through their hair yet again. Both of them enjoyed each other's presence, glimpsing at one another every now and then only to see a relaxed gaze watching the setting sun.
"Ah!" Beomgyu yelled all of a sudden and squinted his eyes in pain. Kai fixed his eyes at him, furrowing his brows as he wondered the reason behind Beomgyu's startle.
"Ah, I looked into the sun." Beomgyu explained, rubbing his eyes with his left hand to ease the stinging pain. Kai began to grin in amusement and let out a small chuckle, Beomgyu's silly nature was something he always adored in him.
"You are such a moron, Beom." Kai raised his right hand and covered Beomgyu's eyes with it. He pushed him back in the grass and fell with him, supporting Beomgyu's head with his other hand so that he didn't hurt him with his sudden movement.
Beomgyu looked at Kai with wide open eyes and it reminded him of the time they both laid on their couch the same way, looking at each other in silence while Kai laid on top of Beomgyu. He remembered how he felt the same as he did now, his heart beating fast at the small distance between both their faces. Kai's lips smiled at him softly as his eyes kept glimpsing at Beomgyu's lips, just as he did that day on their couch.
"Feels like a deja-vu." Beomgyu grinned back, his hands laid on top of his chest and tried to push away his quickly beating heart.
"Could have just kissed you right that day." Kai knew exactly what Beomgyu meant and he felt the exact same way he did that time, but much happier. He looked into his eyes for a quick second before he placed a small kiss on Beomgyu's plump lips. His gentle touch startled Beomgyu slightly.
Kai released his lips from Beomgyu's and fell back on the grass next to him while taking Beomgyu's hand in his. Beomgyu remained in his lying position and let his eyes closed for a few more seconds, taking in the kiss he just got from his best friend.
Kai rubbed Beomgyu's right hand with his thumb, caressing his skin gently and feeling the tickle in his chest that sprinkled all over his body. He liked holding Beomgyu's hand. He held it every time Beomgyu offered it to him.
He lifted up their intertwining hands and held them up in the air. Beomgyu smiled at their hands with a bright gaze and swung them around a bit, the sun shining golden behind them. Kai enjoyed the relaxed swinging and calmly looked at their hands, examining their intertwining carefully.
"I have to tell you something." Kai spoke up all of a sudden. This issue has been on his mind for far too long but for the first time he didn't feel anxious about it.
"Tell me, I'm listening."
"The nightmares I had... that kept me awake at night..." Kai watched their intertwined hands still slightly swinging back and forth even though both of them tried to not move around too much. Beomgyu breathed quietly and waited for Kai to continue talking.
"They weren't mainly about Yeonjun." Kai didn't feel scared at all.
"They were about you." Beomgyu turned his head to look at Kai who calmly looked at their hands flying in the air. Beomgyu thought he seemed to notice a mild smile on his face.
"I was scared to lose you too. The scenarios repeated themselves over and over again while they changed itself every time something happened outside of my dreams. But I don't feel like that anymore, Beom. So you don't have to worry." Kai now turned his head to the side, looking directly into Beomgyu's eyes which had a worried expression in them. Kai intensified his smile, assuring Beomgyu that he meant it sincerely.
"Can you stop looking at me like that now? You look ugly with that expression." Kai teased him with a grin on his face but Beomgyu didn't share his amusement but instead embraced their intertwined hands tightly in front of his chest while looking into the sky with furrowed brows.
"You are so stupid." Beomgyu whispered rather to the sky than to Kai but Kai didn't stop smiling at Beomgyu gently as he felt his beating heart under his shirt. He just stared at him like he always did and admired his pretty side profile, letting his eyes wander up and down the bridge of Beomgyu's nose.
The moment didn't last long as Beomgyu looked at his phone and gasped a little when he looked at the time.
"Oh fuck, it's already that late?" Kai sighed at this comment, knowing that their time together would be over now.
"Ok then." Kai exclaimed and stood up with a grunt. Beomgyu did the same as Kai but remained in a sitting position as he looked up at Kai.
"Have fun, you two." Kai answered with an honest smile and was ready to leave.
"Wait!" Beomgyu exclaimed and quickly stood up, walked over to Kai and reached out for his hand that he held just a minute ago.
"Where are you going? You are coming with me!"
"To Soobin?" Kai asked stunned, his eyes wide open from the sudden revelation.
"Of course, he invited us both. But I told you that already." He answered and slapped Kai's arm with an upset gaze. Kai jerked back a little and took Beomgyu's other hand in his.
"No need to get violent."
"That's what you get when you don't listen to what I tell you." Kai chuckled at Beomgyu delightfully and squeezed his hands gently.
"I'm trying to be better next time."
"You always say that, stop that." Kai laughed at him with his deep voice and Beomgyu laughed with him as he always found Kai's laugh funny in a way.
"Let's go then, jerk." Beomgyu started walking towards the many buildings, dragging Kai with him as he started walking a little later than Beomgyu. He quickly caught up with him and both of them walked side by side, behind them the sun getting slowly engulfed by the horizon.
Kai looked over his shoulder to take a quick glance at the sunset again, the sun shining brighter than ever although less than half of it was still visible.
The sky was filled with tons of different orange tones and Kai's eyes sparkled at that mesmerizing sight. When he saw this view for the first time, he knew that orange would be his favorite color from now on.
The color reminded him of the many moments he had together with Beomgyu when they sat on the large meadow to watch the sunset. It reminded him of the warmth and the heat he felt when the sunlight touched his skin and carved it's memory into it.
It also reminded him of Beomgyu. The joy he always saw in his eyes when they were both having fun together, let Kai feel something that he also felt when he saw the color orange. It filled him with happiness and enjoyment. The same way he loved to see the color orange when the sun went down, he always adored the same feelings he felt when he saw Beomgyu. He was his own little sunshine.
It was always them on the large meadow watching the sun going down. It was always them enjoying this moment together on their own. It was always Beomgyu and Kai watching with mesmerized eyes as the blue sky slowly turned orange and spreaded across the celestial sphere, the sunset the genesis of this spectaculous luminosity.
It was Beomgyu and Kai in the setting sun.
It was You and I in the setting sun.
