Chapter Text
Takashima-san raged as he watched Eijun run along the first years. It's not just about him one sidedly announcing he's a fielder. Eijun looked like someone sucked the light out of him.
He was okay just yesterday. What happened at a night long duration??
After the run, before breakfast, she called out to Eijun.
"Sawamura-kun." She beckoned him. "Can we talk for a moment?"
Eijun walked towards her, knowing what this is all about.
"I'm sorry for my sudden decision, Takashima-san."
Takashima-san lightly tapped his shoulder. "Sawa-- no. Eijun. Is there a problem? You can talk to me..."
"There's none. I just felt like the outfield is calling me." A bullsh** answer. He knew it's a nonsense answer, but he can't voice out things like 'Pitching is not for me.' because for the love of God!!! He can't give it up!!!
"Eijun, you need to think this through. Changing positions so suddenly wasn't a good thing to do." She then sighed. "You know you're in sports scholarship right? If the school deemed you unnecessary to the team, they might revoke your scholarship."
Unnecessary..
Yeah, he is.
"Don't worry, Sensei. I will still practice pitching. But the outfield is really a new experience for me. It's like viewing the game in another point of view. I know it will help me understand my role more." Eijun excused himself.
He can't spew more lies than he already did.
What view? If he needed a new point of view, he would have transferred schools already.
...
He was slowly eating his food at the corner alone when he saw a tray being placed in front of him.
"Yo~. Sawamura. Right?"
Eijun looked up. There he is. The one and only Miyuki Kazuya in all his glory. Smirking down at him as if he wasn't punished by the coach to run earlier because of being late.
"Miyuki.... senpai."
Right. Miyuki deserve respect even if he's a mean, deceiving and manipulative demon.
"Oho~ is someone homesick already? You're clearly lacking in energy!! Eat up! Eat up!!" Miyuki sat himself comfortable in front of him.
Eijun just nodded at him, deigning to eat rather than talk back. He's tired mentally, emotionally and physically.
"Now~ don't just eat and ignore me~ If I remember correctly, you're a pitcher and we even played together." Miyuki saw Eijun slightly froze but then continued to eat. "Hmm? Got nothing to say? Why are you playing outfield? Is it an injury? Trauma? Anything?" Miyuki put his chopsticks down. "You need to throw straight if you play outfield."
Eijun finally looked up, which he regretted almost instantly. Miyuki is looking at him darkly, almost just like how he looked when he got mad because of the Chris issue. "I can throw straight."
"Yeah right!" Miyuki scoffed. "You don't know what you're throwing right?"
"I know. A moving fastball." Eijun looked down again. "I know how to grip the ball properly now. So it probably won't move much like before. Sorry to disappoint you."
Miyuki felt like someone pulled the rug under him, he slipped then fell down the ground hard!! He almost couldn't swallow his rice.
Is this really that idiot loudmouth he met before? This is complete 180 of the brat. Right now, his dark look is close to rivaling Chris-senpai's. Is it really an injury? Not quite. If it is, he wouldn't be playing at all nor be accepted in a sports scholarship.
"Ara~? Is Miyuki bullying a firstie?"
Chills run through the two of them when they heard the eerie voice of Kominato Ryouske.
"Of course not, Ryo-san. I'm just reminiscing with Sawamura here." Miyuki sweat dropped as he saw the doubtful look the third year is giving him.
"You actually know Sawamura??!" A certain Kuramochi popped up just behind Kominato. "And you didn't tell me? Huh, Sawamura?! I thought we're game buddies?!"
"I don't know him." Lies! "We just cooperated for a while." Keep on lying.
Miyuki didn't know why that irked him. What Sawamura said is true, so why does that piss him off?? "Heh~ you do know that you need to get along with me- with us- if you ever get to first string, right?"
Ryouske raised his brow in intrigue. Miyuki was never a person who like to dig into the life of others. The catcher might have a nasty personality, but this scene happening right now doesn't really look like something Miyuki would do. Also, Miyuki quite have the expectations huh~ Warning Sawamura if ever he was promoted to first string? That's another way of saying he's expecting to have him promoted.
"...." Eijun ate his last bite of food. He doesn't want to lie. He doesn't want to have a bad relationship with them, but he doesn't want to get close too. It would be better if they could just leave him alone. What are they even doing, bothering him like this? He didn't say nor do anything note worthy. He didn't even get to the coach Kataoka's bad side this time. So what's with this attention?
"First years!! Proceed to Field B for tests!" A coach called them.
"I need to go now. If you would excuse me." Eijun left the three first stringers there without looking back, so he didn't realize that each and every member of first string were watching him as he walk out the door.
They all chose to remember the first year who seemed to get Miyuki's attention. Though they still don't know if this is something good or not. Gaining the attention of a person with shitty personality doesn't seem nice if you ask them.
...
Eijun watched the first years, like himself, participate in tryouts. This is the event he didn't get to participate before. It's ironic how he's about to try this for the first time but all the excitement left his body long ago. He's not even trying out for the pitcher position he love the most.
"Sawamura Eijun. You're next. Got to your position. We'll be sending balls to you, you just catch it and throw it at shortstop, then first base and so on and last is a throw back home."
"Yes..."
Eijun walked towards the left field, in his hand is a right handed field gloves spare he found somewhere in the shed.
"Ready?!"
"Yes! Anytime!"
*Clang*
Eijun watched a flyball sail high, a long hit. He first look for the shortstops current position. He then positioned himself perfectly as he readied his whole body to throw before he even caught the ball.
*Bam*
"Good! Next!"
Eijun steadily did his job. Almost robotically going through motions. Making sure every bit of his actions were controlled to a certain extent, not too flashy and not too lame.
"This kid." One of the coaches started. "I can't say he's good, but he's not bad either." Narrowing his eyes in thought. "He doesn't seem to be giving his all. It looks instinctive to me. Like, he can do those even while having a conversation with someone."
"I know what you mean! He kinda gives off that steady feeling!!!" The other coach added.
"Now that you mention it, it does seem so? The feeling of someone not doing anything flashy but you can leave your back to? That kind of stability!!" He sighed. "We can't say for sure though? It's only a tryout. We'll see if it's real in games."
"Doesn't he remind you of someone??"
.....
