❝ LOOKING AT YOU, ROAST BEEF ❞
MADI HELD HER breath the best she could as the group hid on top of the elevator. Steve lifted his finger up to his mouth as they all peered down at the two Russian men from above, signalling for them all to be quiet.
Madison wasn't thinking when she reached over and grabbed Robins hand. Robin looked up at Madi with wide eyes when she felt her grab her hand, but she quickly brushed it off and pretended to not let it affect her.
Soon, the two men had driven away, and Steve was ushering the group out from underneath the door.
"Go, go, go," he whispered to them, making sure they were all out before he was.
Madi scrambled to slide under the door, struggling slightly as her clothes prevented her from sliding through cleanly.
She felt Robin reach down and grab her hand, pulling her through so that Steve could get through in time.
He stood up just as the container shattered, leaving a streaming, green goo all over the floor.
"You still wanna drink that?" Robin asked Erica sarcastically, who just glared in response.
"Holy mother of God," Dustin spoke a moment later, causing them all to avert their gaze from the door to what was surrounding them.
Madi almost passed out when she saw the never ending tunnel in front of them, prompting her to grip Robins hands tighter.
"Well, hope you guys are in good shape," Steve said, taking a step forward, before slapping his hand on Dustin's chest lightly. "Looking at you, roast beef."
The group soon took off in a slow walk down the tunnel, none of them really looking forward to it.
Madi found herself falling behind the group slightly, which she found she seemed to have a tendency of doing. When she walked anywhere, she usually got lost in thought, meaning she would just fall behind.
While they were seemingly plummeting to their deaths in that elevator, Madi had yet again felt that sharp pain in her neck. Though she hadn't mentioned it because she felt they had bigger things to worry about than her going insane.
But what if she wasn't going insane? What if it was some type of warning sign? What if Billy was in life threatening danger?
Moments later she felt someone grab her hand and pull her forwards to join the group. When she looked up she saw that it was Robin, and that she had a smile on her face.
"Come on, Madi, why the glum face?" she joked.
"Oh, i don't know. Maybe because we could very well be captured and killed by evil Russians," Madi replied, trying to make it sound funny, but it just ended up freaking her out more. "I mean, how the hell was this all under the mall and no one knows?" she asked.
"I mean you have to admit, as a feat of engineering alone, this is impressive," Dustin replied.
"What are you talking about? It's a total fire hazard. There's no stairs, there's no exit, just an elevator that drops you half way to hell," Steve spoke.
"To be fair to our Russian comrades, i don't think this tunnel was designed for walking. Think about it, they developed the perfect system for transporting that cargo," Robin said. Madi found herself admiring the girl as she spoke, but she quickly snapped out of it when she remembered that Steve could very well notice.
"It all comes into the mall like any old delivery," Dustin agreed.
"And they load it onto those trucks, and nobody's the wiser," Robin continued.
"You think they built this whole mall, just so that they could transport this green poison?" Madi butted in,
"I very seriously doubt it's something as boring as poison," Dustin replied, "It's gotta be much more valuable, like Promethium or something."
"What the hell is promethium?" both Steve and Madi asked.
"It's what Victor Stone's dad used to make Cyborg's bionic and cybernetic components," Robin replied as if it was common knowledge.
Madi found herself smiling at Robin, and nudged their shoulders together to gain their attention.
When the girl looked at her, she smiled, prompting Robin to do the same.
Erica cringed and reached her hands up to hold her stomach. "You're all so nerdy, it makes me physically ill."
"No, no, no. No, don't lump me in with them," Steve said, shaking his head. "I'm not a nerd, all right?"
"Yeah, me neither," Madi pointed out.
"Oh please, you'd so be a nerd if you weren't friends with Harrington over here," Robin laughed.
"Whatever you say," Madi chuckled.
"Why so sensitive, Harrington? Afraid about losing points to a ten year old child?" Robin mocked.
"No, i'm just saying i don't now jack shit about Prometheus," Steve defended.
"Promethium. Prometheus is a Greek mythological figure, but whatever," Dustin said. "All i'm saying is, it's probably being used to make something."
"Or power something," Robin added.
"You mean like, a nuclear weapon?" Madi asked cautiously.
"Totally," Robin nodded.
"Walking towards a nuclear weapon. That's great," Steve scoffed.
"But if they're building something, why here?" Robin asked, causing Madi's heart to lurch slightly. "I mean, Hawkins. Of all places? At the very best, we're a toilet stop on your way to Disney Land-" Robin continued, but Madi, Dustin and Steve all stopped walking and turned to one another.
"You think the Russians know?" Dustin asked them.
"About the..." Steve said.
"They could," Madi nodded in agreement.
"So it's connected?" Steve asked.
"Maybe,"
"How?"
"I don't know but it's..." Dustin spoke, before all three of them spoke the word 'possible' to finish the sentence.
They were interrupted when Robin turned around and shouted to them. "I'm sorry, is there something you three would like to share with the class?" she asked.
They shared a look with one another before Madi went to speak, but stopped when they heard Russian coming from the walkie-talkie.
"Walkie," Steve said, running over to Erica to get her bag.
Madi stared at Robin as she spoke Russian along with the man on the other end of the line. "It's the code," she told them.
"Wherever that broadcast is coming from-" Dustin butted in.
"It's close," Robin nodded. "And if there's one thing we know about that signal," she continued.
"It can reach the surface," Madi said in realisation, looking up at the ceiling.
