Eleanor raises her glass so that it flickers in the light, takes a long sip.  “I’m not like my daughters, Thomas Blake,” she says.

He stares at her.  “What do you mean?”

    “I don’t need bedtime stories.”

Tom Blake goes to the Schofields' for dinner, and remembers.

    Summary

The sun hangs low and red in the sky like a blister. It chases away the sparse clouds, who sprint across the darkening sky like mad dogs. The heavens seem so far away. They arch away from the lake, a vast and generous expanse that pulses. The horizon is infinite, boundless, and only seems to extend now that they have chased after it onto the surface of the lake.

Tom takes Will out to the center of the lake and they eat sandwiches together.

    Summary

The first time it came, I fought and fought, I brought my dead, frozen body back to life and forced it to swim, to walk, to run, to survive. But not for me. Never for me.
    For you.
The second time it came, I had nothing left to hold on for. It was done. I was done. I didn’t let you down.
Life is not the worst thing to lose. It is a friend, a lover, a relative, yourself.

    Summary

The sudden wholeness Tom feels is different than what he’d felt when he’d finally come home from the hospital with Will— different than going home to his mother and hearing her tell him that she was happy he’d found Will. No, this feeling of wholeness almost seems to complete the puzzle because it’s one step short of them both belonging to each other in the complete sense of the word.

Or: Tom and Will have dinner with their downstairs neighbors and the question of marriage is brought up

It’s the easiest thing in the world to lift him, like Tom is just giving in to gravity. Tom Blake is standing, and so Will Schofield has to stand, too.
