One of Those Days

Summary:

Hiccup is visiting the Defenders of the Wing when he is struck with a terrible migraine.

Notes:

Prompt: migraines/chronic pain

Work Text:

It hit Hiccup during a visit with the Defenders of the Wing. He hadn’t had a migraine in a long while, given that they were in times of peace. He usually got them from stress, but today, he woke up with one.

“Ughn…” He rolled onto his side, and that was when he realized his stump was hurting too.

Oh, so it’s one of those days.

Astrid, in the bed with him, pushed herself up and laid a hand on his arm. He had his back to her.

“Hiccup? You okay?”

Hiccup put a hand over his eyes. The light coming in through the windows was too bright. It felt like it was stabbing directly into his skull.

“Migraine,” he mumbled. Talking felt so difficult. His words were all jumbled in his head. “Stump hurts.”

Astrid settled back down, and Hiccup felt her gentle hands on his back. She began rubbing his back and shoulders, and Hiccup gave a sigh and a contented hum.

“That feel okay?” Astrid asked.

“Yeah.”

Hiccup pulled up the blanket and wrapped it around his head to keep the sunlight from his eyes. His neck was awfully stiff. He tried moving his head some more, to get comfortable on the pillow…

And then nearly vomited all over the floor. His world was spinning and rocking like he was on a ship during a storm.

He groaned again once it finally stopped. It was apparently one of the migraines where he’d feel sick if he moved his head.

And his stump . Oh, the ache was terrible. The only thing he really had to ground himself away from pain was Astrid’s hands still rubbing over his back.

“Thanks, Astrid,” Hiccup rasped out, voice tight with pain. “T-tell Mala and Dagur at breakfast that I’ll see them later.”

“You think I’m going somewhere right now?” Astrid asked. “You’re a knucklehead.”

Hiccup couldn’t help but give a small smile at her words; it quickly turned back into a grimace. He hoped his pain wouldn’t last all day and that he’d just be able to sleep it off.

So, he tried to relax and enjoy Astrid’s touch.
