Summary
Will has spent years trying to get over Mike Wheeler.
Dating Carlton was supposed to make that easier.
It didn’t.
Then one wrong message exposes a secret Will never meant to share, and suddenly he has to face the possibility that the boy he’s been trying to forget might have been waiting for him all along.
Some mistakes ruin everything.
Some mistakes tell you what you really wanted.

Summary
The boy turns around, and Mike thinks he must be seeing things. Ghosts, maybe, because that would be the only rational explanation.
All he can do is stare directly at the boy standing before him.
A boy he used to know very well.
What the hell is Will Byers doing at Indiana University?
OR:
In which Mike Wheeler, the captain of the Indiana University hockey team, is forced to help run a skating training camp over winter break to avoid suspension and to participate in the playoffs.
It’s bad enough that he has to miss the vacation he planned with his best friends, but when the figure skater running the camp turns out to be Will Byers, his estranged best friend turned worst enemy, Mike thinks he might actually be the unluckiest person in the world.

"Is this close enough for you?"
Both of Mike's arms wrap firmly around Will's waist, pulling him entirely flush against his own body. "No… Not really."
Will rises up slightly on his toes, wrapping his arms around Mike and resting his chin over his shoulder until he can feel the fast thump of Mike's heartbeat pounding against his own chest.
Mike shudders. His grip on Will's waist tightens, and he turns his head, his nose brushing against the sensitive skin right below Will's ear.
"I don't think I'd ever get close enough to you."
Or: Will is convinced that moving away for college will starve out his feelings. Instead, it just results in Mike booking a weekend trip to finally close the distance—in every sense of the word.

Summary
Mike lets out a frustrated groan and knocks his head back against the seat—like Hopper’s the one being cryptic here.
Mike’s voice cracks slightly when he repeats, “He hurt Will.” More urgent this time. More desperate.
“Okay. I get that,” Hopper says slowly. “But it doesn’t explain why—”
Mike cuts him off, sharp. “If Will didn’t tell you, then I’m not telling you.”
-
When Hopper gets a call about that damn Wheeler kid, he's pissed. Until he realizes what exactly he's dealing with.

Summary
“I panicked, Max. Like, full-body—couldn't breathe."
"Maybe you just need to find someone who can pay attention to you," Max tells him. "Someone who would notice if you were about to freak out, or something."
They're not talking about Mike, obviously, even though he'd be so good at that job.
OR
Mike overhears Will talking about a failed bondage attempt with his boyfriend. Mike becomes obsessed with the idea that he could do better.
