Summary
Magnus wants nothing more than to flood Alec with his magic until it would be easier to separate the waters of two rivers than to untangle where Magnus ends and Alec begins, and the presence of another, the presence of a power that does not belong to Magnus touching Alec’s core is an acid-burn in Magnus’ mind.
It is intolerable and Magnus will not have it.

Magnus' throat is too tight to speak, but there’s a distinct shimmer visible in his suddenly unglamoured eyes.

Alec is still standing just to the right of him and Magnus gestures fondly for Alec to join him on the plush leather seat. Alec smiles at him softly, evenly, and Magnus is helpless against returning that smile just as fondly even though he usually keeps himself sharper-edged here at his court.
And then, keeping his lover’s gaze, Alec drops gracefully to his knees in front of Magnus and Magnus’s breath catches sharply in his throat. Alec, however, just stretches up a single hand and gently rubs a soothing thumb over Magnus’s velvet-clad knee as though in one action he hasn’t just overturned thousands of years of tradition and practice.

Summary
It is acceptable for every Consular High Warlock to have a chosen Consort - one selected by them, who has proved themselves worthy.
However, for a Consort to be formally bonded to that Consular High Warlock - they must have the approval of not just the Consular High Warlock, but the people that High Warlock is responsible for.
Alec has agreed to go through the Consort bonding ritual to be permanently bonded to Magnus.

Summary
Every twenty-five years, the Consular High Warlocks come together for a demonstration for their people. A celebration and a reminder, the event is attended by hundreds of warlocks.
Alec, a freshly turned warlock, is attending the Games for the first time and is excited to see exactly what it is going to be like, and to see Magnus show off.
An undercurrent of something feeling wrong permeates the event and threatens to put everyone at risk as they race to try to figure out what is wrong before anyone is hurt.
