Summary
Edwin had known, from the very beginning, that this day would come. Maybe Charles would decide being a detective was not that fun after all, maybe he’d get curious about what afterlife had in store for him. Maybe he’d get bored of Edwin. But it’d always been a sure thing, in Edwin’s mind, that this could not last forever.
He’s still not ready for it when the day finally arrives.Or; the Case of the Petrified Poltergeist
Or; Edwin has a bit of breakdown.

Summary
He needs to leave! His hand reaches into his jacket pocket, his notebook containing his only way out—
But why isn’t his notebook there? He always has it on him, so where has it gone?
Its feet are large enough to be heard against the floor, taunting and unwavering. It bends in a way that makes Edwin shudder with its unnatural grain. Nothing should move that fast, have that many eyes, have that many legs, the—his—blood is everywhere…
Over and over and over.
He’s never getting out.
He’s never going to see Niko, or Crystal, or—or—
He’s never going to see Charles again.
OR:
After facing a doll-headed spider demon in Hell, Edwin's developed a… phobia, of sorts. He finds it entirely embarrassing in typical Edwin fashion.

Summary
DS Charles Rowland is 35, and loves being a copper. He finally found something he was good at after nearly 30 years of achieving nothing. He wants to help people, wants to make a difference and thought he was going to be able to do that in London. But now he's been moved to a new patch, and given a new boss to report to.
DI Payne is a genius. At 34, he's the youngest person to make DI in 50 years. He's the best of the best, everyone will tell you that. Unfortunately that'll probably be the second thing they tell you. First they'll tell you he's rude, unapproachable and thinks he's better than everyone else. They might even tell you about the colleagues he's supposedly made cry, and definitely made request a transfer.
But he doesn't care if you know that. All he cares about is finding Becky Aspen, before it's too late and she becomes another girl who's death he hasn't been able to solve.

Summary
“For someone who claims not to like thinking,” Edwin says, raising an eyebrow, “you do a remarkably good job of it.”
Charles laughs. “Tell that to my old teachers, mate.”
“If they disagree, then they can’t be very qualified.” Edwin says this simply, like it’s just a fact of life. Like it’s plainly obvious that if anyone thinks Charles is stupid, it’s they who are at fault.
Or: Charles grew up poor and is likely to stay that away, his job at the magic store notwithstanding. By the time he meets Edwin, he's decided that he wants a new life. In between figuring out what's up with the mysterious wish-granting pigeons, and whether he can go to the Royal Ball, Edwin makes him want to take a chance on being happy as well.
