GRAVEYARD SHIFT is a spooky October prompt event for Mel and Frank, inspired by folklore, horror, and all the strange things that live in the space between life and death.

Frank Langdon has always been different, ever since he was a child. He thought he made peace with the fact, doing his best to blend into young adulthood, until he stumbles into his first cadaver lab and comes face to face with his undoing: one dead Melissa King.

“it’s a virus,” mel says, her fists clenching more tightly, the skin over her knuckles turning white. “the symptoms, they’re…kind of like rabies, but turned up to the millionth degree. patients get aggressive and violent and combative. it’s transmitted through blood and saliva, they think.”
“they?” frank asks.
“the cdc. the world health organization, before we stopped hearing from both of them. that’s why they start vomiting so much blood – so they can pass it on. and it’s why…”
she trails off as a tear falls down her cheek.
“why what, mel?” he whispers.
She takes a deep breath, and then lifts her gaze, looks at him right in the eyes.
“it’s why they try to eat people. if they manage to kill them, it’s sustenance. if they don’t – or if they get killed – at least they passed it on through the bite.”
he waits for the punchline. to wake up from this absolutely bizarre, messed-up dream. but he’s awake now. and they don’t lie to each other.
(or, a hit from an aggressive patient knocks frank langdon into a coma. when he wakes up, twenty-eight days later, the world has ended.)
