Steve and Tony had a good thing going. They were close friends, great teammates, and so long as Tony never found out about Steve's - ahem - slight infatuation with him, everything would be fine. Steve was happy to let that finely-balanced dynamic continue on indefinitely, because hell, having Tony as his friend was better than not having him at all.
This, of course, was before Clint's extended family decided to get involved in matters.

“Don’t you ever do something like that again. Not for me.” Pope says seriously, his pained eyes never once leaving JJ’s face. Shaking his head lightly against the hands holding his cheeks, JJ sighs, the act painful against his bruised ribs.
“I can’t promise that.” He murmurs, and though his voice is low, he knows Pope hears him, because his face turns desperate. “Why not?” The boy responds, voice pleading.
And something in JJ shatters.
“Come on, Pope. You know why.” He whispers, squeezing his eyes shut.

Wally wanted to ask why Roy, what did he see in Roy? What did he see in the man that would rather leave without a decent goodbye? Someone who would always be chasing a pipe dream. Why did Wally hate it so much?
Instead, Wally just smiled. “So, where do you want to go?”
Or: Wally really doesn't know what Dick sees in Roy, even if he insists they are just friends. Who knew it only took him dying and coming back to figure out it had never been about Roy.

Suguru blinks.
What, he mouths to Satoru. Normally, he wouldn’t hesitate to lean over and whisper furtively in the other’s ear, but they’ve already gotten ferociously lectured at by Yaga just this very morning regarding their typical classroom behavior, and Suguru figures they should at least try to appear as vaguely competent students for one day.
Satoru doesn’t say or mouth anything in return. Instead, his eyebrows lift suggestively. There’s something almost like panic in his eyes, and with one more long and pointed stare, he shifts his eyes away. Suguru thinks he’s supposed to know what Satoru means. Suguru has no idea what Satoru means.
Suguru looks back at the note.

Satoru shifts closer to him with a quiet sigh, until their noses are touching and their breaths mingle together. Their hands find each other under the blankets.
“You were never a duty. You’ve never felt like a duty to me. You should never feel like one. I shouldn’t have let that happen.” His pupils are dilated. “And I never made any decision. It made itself. My feelings, everything I say, it’s true. It’s the reality. I can’t imagine it ever changing."

“Not again,” he hears Satoru muttering one day as they hike up the usual path to the school, and when Suguru turns, the question sitting on his tongue dissolves away. Because Satoru’s not looking at him at all, but rather a familiar group of girls a few feet behind them. They’re all watching the two of them curiously, with one girl in particular waving energetically at Suguru. Hesitantly, Suguru waves back, and a scowl forms on Satoru’s face.
“They really do bother you,” Suguru notes when the girls finish waving farewell and trek back down the mountain, turning back to Satoru, who quickly and unsuccessfully tries to turn his expression placid again.
“No, they don’t,” he tries anyway, and Suguru raises a single eyebrow.
“Really,” he says dryly, and watches with no small sense of amusement as Satoru flushes lightly under his scrutiny.
“They don’t,” Satoru insists, but he’s still refusing to meet Suguru’s eyes.
