This is the one where Jayne becomes River's de facto interpreter in the aftermath of the episode 'Objects in Space', being able to understand what she's saying in her peculiar way, often to the consternation of other members of the crew. With Jayne's assistance, River is able to contribute more to the crew's well-being (and spread her own wings, getting a bit of healthy distance from Simon), starting with bunking in with Kaylee, to help her recover from the trauma of Early's threats and actions.
For some reason, only the first 22 of 24 chapters of this completed fic are posted on Twisting the Hellmouth, but it's also posted on sevangel's LiveJournal (scroll down to "New Day Dawning" for individual chapter links).

Pairings: Kaylee/Simon, Wash/Zoe, Mal/Faith, River/Jayne (in case anybody freaks out bout that last pairing, I just want to point out the age differences between Angel/Buffy and Spike/Buffy. I am an avid River/Jayne shipper, can’t not put them together).

One of my favorite 'Rayne' authors to re-read, and this is one of my favorites among her crossover stories, frequent typos notwithstanding!
Also posted on sevangel's LiveJournal (link is to the mostly updated index page for all her stories, so you need to scroll down to "Slayers in Space" for individual chapter links).Won 1st place for "Best Portrayal of Faith" in the 2008 Crossing Over Awards on Twisting the Hellmouth (after winning 4th place in the same category in 2007). "Slayers in Space" also won 2nd place for "Best Firefly Crossover" in the 2006 COA and 2nd place again in 2007.
Additionally, sevangel won 1st place in the category "Best Crossover Author" in the 2007 COA and was tied for 1st place in the category "Most Nominations (author)" in the 2007 COA.
Also won 3rd place 2005 Best of Rayne "Most Potential" award for best unfinished fic.
