Pride-a-versary

Summary:

Dean grabs something from his back pocket. He shows Cas a small button with the bi pride flag. "We're goin' to a parade this weekend."

Cas leans back so he can look Dean full in the face. "A Pride parade?"

Notes:

Happy four months! Conveniently, this month's anniversary fell on the perfect prompt day for @spnprideweek. Happy Pride!!!

Work Text:

"Happy Pride-a-versary, babe." Dean throws a gift bag at Cas and flops onto the couch next to him.

Cas stares at the bag in his lap like he's trying to see through it. Multicolored tissue paper sticks out of the holographic bag. He puts his hands in, pulling out multiple packages of various sizes. "What's all this?"

Dean leans his head on Castiel's shoulder. "Open one."

Cas rips open a medium sized package, removing a rainbow sweat headband and matching wristbands. He stretches the headband, looking at Dean with a bemused expression. "Once again, I ask: what's all this?" He continues to open packages, revealing more and more rainbow paraphernalia.

"Uh, rainbows? Y'know," Dean says as Cas holds up a rainbow tie. "Gay stuff."

Cas chuckles. "Oh? Is this proper attire for us gays?"

Dean kisses his cheek. "Only for special occasions."

Cas perks up at that. "Am I to wear all these items?"

"Nah, only what you want."

Cas glances at the tie still in his hand. "I like this."

Dean takes it from his hands and wraps it around his neck, pulling Cas in to kiss him. "Thought you might," he says with a wink.

Cas, still in his pajamas (one of Dean's old shirts and black sweatpants that say “JUICY” across the backside in bright pink), properly knots the tie. "What's the occasion?"

Dean grabs something from his back pocket. He shows Cas a small button with the bi pride flag. "We're goin' to a parade this weekend."

Cas leans back so he can look Dean full in the face. "A Pride parade?"

Dean, under the scrutiny of Cas' gaze, shrinks a bit. He starts fidgeting with the pin, tapping his fingernails against the enamel. "Yeah. ‘Cause it’s Pride month, and there’s one not that far. I thought, y'know...you'd want to? I dunno. We don't have to go, honestly, but -"

Cas puts a finger to Dean's mouth to shut him up. His hand on the pin stills. "Dean. I'd love to go with you. But I don’t want you to go just for my sake. I wouldn't want you to feel..." Cas searches for the phrase in the space next to Dean's head, "uncomfortable."

Dean smiles, relaxing. "As long as I have you, I'll be good. And,” he looks at the pin in his hands, “I do want to go. Thanks."

Cas smiles back, then points at the pin. "Do you want something bigger?"

Dean starts fidgeting again. "Now, that might make me uncomfy."

Cas covers Dean's hands with his own. He kisses Dean’s knuckles. "Just the pin is fine. Although," Cas says as he reaches into the bag, "I do think you would look ravishing in this." He snaps the headband onto Dean's forehead. Dean winces comically.

"Ow," he says, holding in a laugh

That weekend, they stand with hundreds of people, watching the drag performance on a makeshift concert stage in the middle of the road. Dean has the headband on, and he is covered in glitter. Shiny heart-shaped stickers dot his forearms and cheeks, and confetti is caught in his hair. He sings along as loud as he can to the Queen song blasting through the speakers, one arm around Cas’ shoulders, swaying and pulling Cas along with him. A bi flag that he bought from a vendor for $10 is tied around his shoulders like a cape. Cas, in his typical attire save for the rainbow tie, sings along as well. He rests one hand on the small of Dean’s back, while the other waves a small rainbow flag in time to the song.

That evening, in the emptying street, Dean wraps his arms around Cas’ neck. Cas steadies him with both hands on his hips.

“I had fun,” Dean says, a little drunk and a lot giddy. He takes a sticker from his forehead and smacks it onto Cas’ cheek, patting it down.

Cas smirks. “Me, too.” He kisses Dean. “It’s nice seeing you let loose like this.”

Dean smiles smugly, lifting his chin and shrugging his shoulders to emphasize the bi cape. “Yeah. Really felt the love. And the gay...ness.”

“Ready to go home? We could continue ‘the gayness’ there,” Cas says, doing air-quotes.

“Hell yeah.”

They hold hands and start to walk back to the Impala, parked a few blocks down from the main parade route to keep her away from the crowd. They walk through a residential neighborhood in comfortable silence, listening to the fading noises of the parade. Before Cas rounds the hood to get into the driver's seat, Dean pulls his hand.

“Hey, Cas?”

Cas turns to him. “Yes?”

Dean ruffles some confetti out of Cas’ hair, then gently trails his hand down to cup Cas’ cheek. “I love you.”

Cas leans into Dean’s hand. “I love you, too.”

“Like...so much.”

“I know.”

“It was, uh. Really awesome spending my first Pride with you.”

Cas holds the hand on his face, turning to kiss Dean’s palm. “We should go next year, too. Make it a tradition, invite some friends.”

Dean looks at his arm. “Only if I can get all the glitter off me by then.”

“I can help you do that,” Cas says, running his hands up and down Dean’s sides.

Dean laughs.
