Summary
Any girl grows up with the story of the Red String of Fate. The string that Yuè Lao tied around the smallest right finger of every person born into the world — the string that connected one soul to the person chosen to share its heavenly duty.
Boys grew up with the stories too, of course. Except that Fate, being a man-made idea, could be molded to fit varied audiences. Fate could place two souls on opposing sides of a battlefield, where they would meet and clash and meet again across decades. Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi, after all, had been fated. Had known each other so well across years of war that Zhuge Liang had once won a siege with nothing but an open gate and the certainty that his Fated would think too much, see too much, and not attack at all.
