Summary
“Should I be worried?” Peter asks, picking at the edges of his nails.
Jason shakes his head. “No, no, no. That’s my job.”Luckily, the stubborn kid accepts that. He wanders to the living room, dropping his backpack on the couch and pulling out a science workbook. Within seconds he’s absorbed again, pencil tapping lightly as he scribbles something far beyond his grade level.
Jason watches him, standing there, leaning in the hallway, breathing through the throb of adrenaline still grinding in his veins.He doesn’t know who touched the doorknob.
He doesn’t know whether it was connected to the school lockdown.
That’s two things too many that he doesn’t know.

The room settled into a comfortable chaos, voices overlapping like a melody.
Jason stayed near Peter, close but not hovering. He stayed watching; letting himself breathe. For a while, it felt almost normal… and that scared him more than anything else.

For a moment, just a moment, Jason let himself feel it.
