First impressions are often wrong. Steve’s first impression of Eddie was that he was a crass older alpha with too many tattoos to ever possibly be gainfully employed. Eddie’s first impression of Steve was that he was a young uptight omega who needed to get the pretentiousness fucked right out of him.
Their first date was an absolute disaster, but the one night of passion they spent together afterwards was a decent consolation prize… At least until the pregnancy test shows up positive a few weeks later.

Everything about him reeks of verisimilitude, of a rawness that taunts Steve and the carefully constructed crown he's tried so hard to leave behind.
It isn't in his nature. Steve is made of brick and bone, a wall around everyone he's ever loved, and that's all that matters, in the end.-

"You guys are used to all of this shit going on, but I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. Still trying to come to terms with the fact that we may not even come out of this alive, so I apologize if I walk around a little so I don't tear my fucking hair out."
"Well what do you normally do when you need to, like, get rid of energy?"
It's been days of Eddie running on very little food and sleep, which is the only possible explanation for why he says what he says next.
"Jack off, usually." He freezes in place, but before he can even begin to be mortified, Steve shrugs and says "So do that."

Eddie believes him, trusts him with his life, literally. It takes multiple surgeries and one desperate resuscitation on the operating table, but Steve's promise holds true. Eddie survives.
It's a month later, when Eddie is finally home and looking over his still-healing scars, that he sees the little baby scrawled right where his thigh and hip meet.

"I mean, you present yourself as this big romantic," Eddie says, his head lolling over to look at Steve. "I'm just wondering if there's anything darker hiding under that prince charming exterior, or if you're all missionary and tender love-making to the core."
Steve is grateful for the low lighting that covers the way his face suddenly flushes, because— there is something. It's not something he's ever admitted out loud, and just fantasizing about it has left him feeling guilty more than once.
There's no way he can look Eddie in the eye and say 'I've thought about sneaking in through my girlfriend's windows and fucking them while they're asleep'.

The thing was, Steve knew he was a jealous guy, okay? Like, it was a terrible way to be, and he often wished he wasn’t, but he was a jealous guy, always had been. It was just previously, it had been jealousy over other people. But Eddie brought out the weird in him. Always had.
And the other thing was, Eddie loved his guitar. It made sense! The guitar was expensive, the guitar was his ticket out of Hawkins, the guitar was how he made music. But sometimes watching the way he cleaned her, the way his fingers moved so carefully up and down her strings—the way he kissed her good morning?
Steve was green with envy. And green was not a good color on him.

“Mama?” Amy moves from Eddie’s neck to lean into Steve. “Mama, I don’t feel good.”
