Summary
Briar was taken in from the streets of Summersea by Duke Vedris and raised to hold a position in his household. He's been given many honours and opportunities, and now his match to a wealthy merchant's daughter will give him money and connections as well. He's grateful, really he is. But sometimes he wonders if it's really what he wants.
“Is something the matter, Briar?” Sandry asked.Briar sighed. “No, it’s nothing, I just…” He trailed off, not sure how to explain it without sounding ungrateful.
Sandry studied him for a moment. “Are you nervous?” she asked. “I wouldn’t have expected it of you; you’re always so confident – but this is a significant moment for you.”
“I suppose I am,” Briar said slowly. Nervous wasn’t exactly how he’d describe it, but he could work with it. “I just… wasn’t expecting this. Marriage was never really something I considered for myself – given my upbringing, you know.”
