Toxicity
They say that necessity is the mother of invention; I think that the cousin to this aphorism is that toxicity is the goad of discernment.ย The stories in this collection aren't very nice ones, looking at the actions and thoughts of people who would see themselves as gods, evil rulers of the world, comic book supervillains, etc., or at the least the callous behavior of those who are thoughtless of others' needs. ๐ฒ

It's probably not a good idea to read this if you've been abused or stalked or anything like that. This one's a monologue written as if from the perspective of a self-aware narcissist of malign disposition and in some position of power.I didn't really like the thought of writing this piece, but it came to me whole-cloth as I read Roger MacBride Allen's โShattered Sphereโ, when I realized that there were some [psychological and arguably sociological] similarities between D&D Beholders, Tim Pratt's โAxiomโ [series of same name], and David Moody's โHatersโ [also series of same name]. They're none identical to the next, but there's a certain underlying commonality between them that resonates with the toxic narcissists of the Icewall universe.
