He thought things were going well. Sharing the same car, the light-hearted conversation, and the joke about her being a "freak in the sheets"... everything felt almost normal again. She leapt onto a moving pickup to stop him from getting stabbed in the face – what was that?
Then there was that conversation in the elevator. She insisted he didn't need to thank her, didn't need to explain. But he felt compelled to. He admitted he had messed up everything up but promised he would spend the rest of his life repaying her kindness in small doses she allowed. It seemed they had restarted something.
