"Steve?" Nancy asked. "What the hell is going on?"
Steve looked up and smiled. "Morning, Nance! Robin, Jonathan." He sighed softly, turning to cast a forlorn look towards the table. "You guys should've told me you were coming over, I would've set extra places." He lifted the bowl of pancake batter that sat next to him on the counter and seemed to evaluate it for a moment, before sitting it back down, then saying, "I should have enough for everybody. Dustin, could you please set a few more places at the table?"
Dustin looked absolutely affronted. "Why can't Max do it?!"
"Max is busy right now, working on her character sheet." Steve replied easily.

"Mother," Dustin said, trying to keep his voice and face blank. "Where are my Dungeons and Dragons things?"
"I threw them out." His mother replied, in a clipped tone. "With all those silly little fictional books of yours. You need to focus on your studies."
Her voice was rising in volume, in a way that made him want to cower in fear, worse than any creature from the Upside Down.
Dustin felt sick to his stomach, but also felt the desperate need to apologize for whatever he had done, but instead, he merely nodded and went back upstairs.Once he had closed and locked the door behind him, he settled at the desk and turned on Cerebro.

He knew when he woke up that it was not going to be a good day. He knew when he woke up and he already felt the adrenaline coursing through his veins, his body tensed when he removed the pressure of his blankets, and no amount of hand flapping and jumping up and down made it feel better.
It wasn’t a meltdown day, just a ‘I feel like I’m vibrating out of my skin and need comfort and I need to stim’ day.

Steve chooses that very moment to speak up and Dustin jolts, worried for a second there that Steve had spotted him. But, he soon realises, Steve’s eyes still haven’t strayed from Eddie. “You should tie your hair up more often.” he says in a gravelly voice, lips quirking up into a half-smirk.
Eddie swivels, spatula in hand that he points Steve’s way, and he lets out a light-hearted laugh that sounds foreign coming from him. “And why is that, Stevie?”
Steve shrugs, taking a slow sip of his coffee. “You look good. Do I need a reason?”

"Dustin?"
He snapped out of it, grabbed his backpack and small duffel bag and climbed out the window, not caring about the rain soaking his already damp day clothes. Now wasn't the time to think about who will see him, they have all seen each other at their worst, it was fine.
Despite having thought that, he felt a huge amount of relief when he saw that it was just Eddie in the passenger seat of Steve's BMW, looking as worried as the man himself. Eddie was also an important figure in his life, so a weight was lifted off his shoulders. He really didn’t want any of his other friends to see him like this.
Steve jumped out of the car and didn't hesitate to bring him into the warmest hug ever, one that Dustin didn't realize he desperately needed until this moment. He let himself cry again, but now he knew that everything will be fine.
