And so, when Kaveh comes to him—all hesitance and excitement, frazzled and uncertain but wanting so deeply the wanting pains him, and says that his mother has written to him from Fontaine, with news that she has news to tell him, and asks Alhaitham would you come with me? and does not say I don’t want to go there alone, there is only one thing Alhaitham can say in response, and it is abundantly not the truth.
“I have some paid leave I haven’t used,” he says (he doesn’t, he uses his leave freely because letting it sit there for some nebulous and potentially never existing rainy day seems ridiculous to him, when he can just walk up to his Archon and say he’s going away for a month and she will just smile at him and say okay! Have fun!) “I can probably fix my schedule to come with you.”
Alhaitham and Kaveh find themselves in Fontaine, at the behest of Kaveh's mother.
