Summary
Visual language and spoken language don’t always intersect, but there are a few rare cases in which they do; one of those rare cases being in the art of lip reading.
Kaveh has never been particularly proficient at lip reading—and why would he? He spends much of his life devoted to technology and numbers, he considers the fact that he understands more than a handful of languages a semi-impressive feat on its own. His partner on the other hand is much, much more proficient than he ever could be.
But there is a phrase which Kaveh recognises and can read with ease. And it is a phrase he never gets tired of feeling, hearing and seeing.

“Whyever in the world would you be retiring? You’re barely thirty.”
“Extenuating circumstances,” Alhaitham says. “I wanted an opportunity to get my affairs in order.”
“Your affairs? What, are you—”
“I’m sick, Kaveh. Haven’t you noticed?”
“The coughing. Sure.” Kaveh swallows, then keeps talking like he didn’t just exhibit such an obvious nervous tell. “So, you’re sick. Is that any reason to upend your life? I understand needing to take the time to get better, but—”
“I am not going to get better. I am going to get worse, and then I am going to die,” Alhaitham says plainly.

The truth of the matter is, Kaveh has no idea how to read Alhaitham. He prides himself on being an expert at understanding people, his empathetic heart lending him the capacity to relate deeply with those around him (oftentimes to his detriment). But with Alhaitham, there is nothing for him to read; no clues from his cool expression for him to grasp. The man appears stoic all the time even during their petty bickering.
Honestly, when was the last time Kaveh has seen the man do anything except smirk or frown? Does Alhaitham feel happiness? Has he ever seen the man laugh?
Kaveh's mind is drawing a blank on the latter and it...bothers him deeply.

Kaveh devises a plan to get Alhaitham to smile by being aggressively nice to the man (and also maybe if he makes Alhaitham happy, he can score a discount on his rent or something). Alhaitham thinks Kaveh ate some mind-altering mushrooms and is, understandably, confused and mildly afraid.Series

“You despise my idealism,” Kaveh says matter-of-factly. “Vehemently and quite publicly with no small amount of vitriol.”
“See it as a result of our disagreements then,” Alhaitham counters. “My mind hasn’t been as sharp without you to argue with.”
Kaveh has never despised his own body more than in this moment. His cheeks flush unbidden and he feels a warm tug in his chest at something that’s hardly a compliment.
Dori sells Kaveh a love potion (under duress). Annoyed with Alhaitham, Kaveh slips it in his coffee one morning only to discover that Alhaitham's behaviour doesn't change at all...
