So like . . . sometimes I look at their comments that go like, "We're not real, we don't need to eat, etc." and it's . . . kinda disturbing, when ya think about it. The casualness of it, while also displaying their own individuality making them seem human. Just kinda weird and jarring sometimes to be reminded of it and to hear them say it so nonchalantly. But also kinda funny? Like it made me laugh. Then again, it's like three in the morning so that probably doesn't help...
So yeah! This has me super excited as well! I like how Patton's the one to notice Virgil's behavior first. Well, Roman noticed beforehand a bit ago, and the part where he admitted to realizing something was up but hadn't acted on it, I really dug his tone there. Even Roman knows rushing in is not how to win this particular battle. Sure, it could probably be argued that doing something would be better than doing nothing, but I think this is a case where it's better to pick your battles. If you know you'll lose, why charge in? I wonder if Patton never brought it up to the others, if Roman wouldn't have brought it up to them eventually? Called in back up, so to speak, because they could help him think out of the box on a solution. Or maybe Roman would have waited, coming up with a game plan that fit. Idk, it's food for thought but what's really important here is that when Roman first showed up, he came barreling down the stairs with a sword. He is a man ready for anything. Evil doers beware.
Sorry, losing my train of thought. Anyway! I'm actually glad that this chapter ended with a disagreement? It was a good way to set up tension and portray the characters accurately. Just because you set up a family meeting to form a game plan doesn't mean everyone will agree. Nah, that'd be too easy. But I like this subject that Logan inevitably brought up, how he's worried for Thomas and Patton lays it down like, NO! This isn't just about Thomas. This is about Virgil as an individual. It's that discussion that I liked so much back in The Aspects of Being Human, but it's DIFFERENT now. More than just that this is centered on Virgil. If it wasn't 3am, I could probably articulate this better, but as it stands, you do words good.
I'm honestly freaking pumped to see where this goes, so good luck with the rest!
If you notice, I typically only make Logan make those comments. Patton and Roman are aware of it, sure, but it's never something they're bothered by (They're real in the mindscape and feel real things, so who cares?). Virgil can relate to Logan more than the other two can, but he's personally passed the phase of caring so much about the fact. (He even used it to his advantage in TAOBH to hide his feelings for Roman!)
I'm glad you noticed that Roman's first appearance was him ready to not only fight, but protect Patton. Roman is going to be interesting to write in this fic, as his arc doesn't come until after Patton and Logan's. He's obviously not the kind of man who wants to wait on the sidelines - he rushes in, sword in hand, ready to fight! So why does it take so long? Roman may have mixed feelings about Virgil, but he doesn't hate him anymore, and his immense guilt should drive him to help, right? The problem is, that same guilt is what's making him hold back.
It's important to note that Patton knows and still feels that Thomas is their number one priority, but Patton also knows if you go in helping Virgil just for the sake of Thomas, then that's not going to help at all. The last sentence in this first chapter holds the entire structure of this fic: Virgil needs more than just acceptance, just a voice to be heard at the debating table.
You're gonna probably find a lot of similarities to TAOBH (even their names are kinda similar!). They both have the same idea of exploring the sides and their growth, but hopefully with the lens on Virgil and healing, it'll be plenty different.
Thank you so much for the long comment, they make me VERY excited to write!
