After a few minutes, voice small and shaking, Peter broke the silence. “May, I think I’m going crazy.”
Looking over at her nephew sitting in the passenger’s seat of the car, May didn’t fail to notice his hands curled into fists in his lap, as if to halt their constant tremors. She knew Peter was hurting. She knew he was reaching for some sort of solid ground. Something stable. Something that wasn’t there. But until that very moment, until May heard Peter utter those words, those broken, hopeless words, she hadn’t fully realized the gravitas of the situation.

Summary
He thought back to that day in the car, when he finally, tearfully, told May that he needed help. It wasn’t that long ago, only a month or so, but Peter couldn’t help but feel he was falling harder and faster than ever. That he was an atomic missile within inches of hitting its target. Ready to explode on impact. As if one little thing would cause him to explode and poison the entire city with radiation. They were the unlucky ones. The ones who survived the impact. Just like he was unlucky in so many ways.

Summary
The tears were what got him, reminding Tony of that day. The day he worked tirelessly for seven months to reverse. The only other time, up until now, he had seen Peter cry. Had seen him this terrified. Tony had to remind himself that Peter wasn’t ash stuck in between his fingernails anymore. That he was a living, breathing person. A person who was currently hyperventilating from a panic attack in a back alley in Queens.

He felt like an average kid having an average day and the relief at that thought was palpable, visceral and real.
