    Summary

Genji can hear rain falling outside; thunder rumbling, deep and resonant. Someone breathing.

    He isn’t alone.

There is warm skin under his fingers, a heartbeat thudding against his cheek, a big hand splayed loosely over the small of his back. Blankets tangle around his thighs, fabric brushing over the ends— he’s not wearing his prosthetics. Not his right arm, not either of his legs; no armor, no faceplate. Genji isn’t alarmed by this, which is troubling in and of itself, but he doesn’t question it right away.

Genji isn’t sure of where he is; isn’t sure of when he is, or what’s happened to him. The last thing he remembers with any clarity is heading back to the Watchpoint to answer the recall, but even that is foggy. There are snatches of things he knows must have come after— missions with newer Overwatch agents, conversations with Hanzo— but thinking too hard about it makes his head flare with sharp agony, and so Genji doesn’t.

Whoever is pressed against him in bed shifts, drawing Genji in closer in their sleep, and he blinks his eyes open. Jesse.

    Of course it’s Jesse.

    Summary

Jesse is awake early, the sun only just easing up over the horizon. Everything is hushed in a way it won’t be again until nightfall; the kind of quiet that requires reverence, or abandonment. Churches, and graveyards, and the stillness of morning.

He’s comfortable and content, caught up in his blankets, but once he’s lost the thread of drowsiness he can never catch it again. Jesse presses his face into tangled green hair, and breathes for a while. Warm skin under his fingers, the faint scent of shampoo.

Then he leaves Genji sleeping, just like he always does.

He’s halfway through making breakfast, whistling the melody of a song he can’t quite remember the words to, when he feels Genji’s eyes on him from down the hall. Their bedroom door is open. Genji’s laid out sideways on Jesse’s pillows, hair in his eyes, uncharacteristically alert.

Watching Jesse with blatant interest, but there’s also something confused there, something calculating. Like he’s trying to figure Jesse out.

Like he’s trying to remember him, but it’s just out of his grasp.

    Summary

They don’t usually have a fight waiting, but sometimes, one comes looking for them.

Sometimes Gabriel comes to find Jesse, and they go together. Genji doesn’t go with them— he doesn’t have any of the love for Gabriel that still lives in Jesse, now. Against all odds. Hanzo is in no place to judge Gabriel.

Genji is in no place to judge Jesse. The wounds they’ve cut into one another stitch them all together.

Jesse goes with Gabriel, and his gear, and his guns.

Genji comes to Hanzo and crawls into his bed.

It isn’t safe for Genji to sleep alone. Not with the way his body betrays him from time to time, throwing Genji backwards through the years and snatching half his memories.

Sometimes he gets lost and tries to go back home; to the place where their father is buried.

To the place where Hanzo cut him into pieces and left him for dead.

Sometimes he’s lost. Sometimes he’s terrified.

Sometimes there is nothing, and Genji is no one. It’s Hanzo’s fault, like most things, now; Genji forgave him a long time ago.

He’s a fool, the way Jesse is a fool. It’s no wonder they ended up here, together.
