Summary
Everything about their lives would change. Had already changed. They were now rulers of a people, an entire kingdom that stretched further than they had yet to see. Edmund may have been ready, but Peter certainly was not. He wasn’t sure if he could bear the burden.

After a gloriously long summer and a waning autumn, winter had finally reached Cair Paravel—it was only a dusting of snow over the ridge of the citadel, and it melted away in the rising sun, but the first sign of frost left its mark.

Summary
The four did not move in a group, exactly, but they moved with one another. The younger boy would pivot cleanly out of the way when one of the girls turned to join his conversation, and the older girl seemed careful to never be too far from her sister—no more than an arm’s reach away. And the eldest, the High King, never once stood with his back to the others, as though he were keen to keep them all in his sights.
Watching them, Nadora felt an old, yet familiar ache in her chest.Series

Summary
Lucy, for all her authority as queen, seemed similarly eager for the freedom the sea provided. Nadora could see it in the way she stood—limbs loose, a few strands of her golden hair blowing in the soft breeze, an easy smile upon her lips. She was at peace upon the water, even just standing at the edge of it.

Summary
It had taken time for Peter to understand he did not have to bear the full responsibility of Narnia’s well-being on his shoulders alone. He had plenty of discussions about the matter with Susan, Edmund, and Lucy each—more than once and, from time to time, with all of them together. And yet, as much as he knew he wasn’t alone, the doubt lingered.
His conversation with Corin that morning was a clear reminder, and no matter how he’d managed to calm the prince’s worry, Peter’s remained.

Summary
Death left Edmund hopeless to shake his stubborn youth. It was not equipped to hold the weight of all the lives he was responsible for. It was barely enough to hold onto his own burdened existence.
He was desperate to be a better king, and stuck facing the bitter truth that he still had such a long way to go.

Summary
She cared deeply for her men, for all her people, but of the four Narnian monarchs, the lines she drew between royal and other were better defined. To her mind, it helped her keep from slipping into informal tones during various matters of court—something of more use to her, perhaps than for her siblings.
The price, of course, was a sharp distance between her and her subjects.

Summary
He grit his teeth. It was frustrating, how often a situation like this came down to this… this thing. Edmund still hadn’t quite figured out what it was, exactly—a point of pride, perhaps or a delicate vulnerability he didn’t want to pry into. He knew only that it was the last thing he wanted. The last thing that should stand between brothers.
But it did.

Summary
“Yes,” he answered haughtily, “Peter tells me all the time.”
“Does he tell them the same?” she countered, flustered by just how quick Corin was to call upon King Peter. Peter this. Peter that. It was always Peter, but she was Corin’s friend. And she knew… well, she didn’t actually know very much about diplomatic matters such as this. However, she did know it was probably not smart to share private matters of state with outsiders, let alone a member of another royal family. Allies or not, child or not, Corin and Archenland were not Narnia or Galma. Neither had any reason to know anything about their dealings.Series

Summary
It took some time for the outstretched hand in front of her to fully register. Held out toward her from above, King Peter’s hand was no longer gloved as it waited patiently for her.
Nadora blinked, eyes darting from his palm up to his face, and then squinted. Though the bulk of his form blocked out a good portion of the sky in her direct view, she could still see the bright light of the daytime shining behind and around his head. If she didn’t already know what he looked like while wearing a crown, she might have guessed he had it donned now for the way his hair seemed to glow and shine about his face.Series

Summary
Early in his kingship, Peter had spent many sleepless nights laid out on the throne hall’s floor. It was easier to sneak around inside the castle at night, than it was to sneak out onto the grounds in the middle of the night, and the glass roof allowed him to see the sky unobstructed. He’d memorized the summer constellations that first month.
But this phenomenon was something different.Series

Summary
It was entirely possible that Peter believed he was undeserving of his crown. She hoped that wasn’t true. But whether it was or was not, Peter did feel the need to earn the things that came with his crown—the love of his people. Their trust and loyalty. Their appreciation.
Peter desired, more than anything else it seemed, to prove he was worth their admiration.Series

Summary
He knew where he was needed, and frankly, it was not here, at Nadora’s bedside. But try as he might, Peter simply could not bring himself to leave her in her current state, no matter how important it was for him to join his men outside. He knew his first responsibility was to Narnia. The kingdom relied on him to act with their best interest at heart, and to do all he could to protect them when needed. And Peter would stand by that, always.
Even if he wanted so much more.Series

Summary
Ilona gravitated toward Nadora's writing desk — the only space within the whole room that showed signs of true interaction — where several thick letters sat in disarray. She ran her fingers over the envelopes, taking in each one. She'd seen enough missives over the years to recognize the seal as Narnian, but where the red wax was distinct, the image pressed into it was not the royal one.

Summary
Peter had shared all of his worries and apologies and hopes and uncertainties in his letters, and now, with each step and every swing of her sword, she finally responded. Not with a barrage of attacks, nor a monologue or declaration, but a dialogue. Each blow posed a question, and each parry a response. There were more questions than answers in their exchange at first, the dance more complicated as they went on. But neither lessened their resolve. The only victory today would be one of truth, not courtesy.

Summary
It had been eight months since she’d been this close to the sea. Eight months since she’d let the tide come in to wash her toes or have the sand give way from beneath her feet as the water retreated. Eight months since she’d last stood here and watched the sky as she did now, counting the stars.
