Summary
Bucky wondered again what Steve would think of him, crisply cutting carrots and onions, cooking for them with the vegetables he’d grown. He closed his eyes and imagined Steve telling him about how beautiful their home was, how delicious the meal was, how Bucky was good and how he could create good things for them to share.
He shivered hard.
It was like he could already feel the line of Steve’s chest against his back, his warm hands coming around to ruck up the tummy of his shirt. He hoped Steve would be pleased to feel the softness there, the physical reminder of Bucky’s choice to stop fighting. Butterflies erupted in his belly and his cheeks grew hot.
Soon, the rest of their lives would start.

Summary
Before Steve knows what he's doing, he's running the tip of his finger over a sparkling diamond. He feels the small grooves, imagines the way they’d feel against his lips as he kisses Bucky’s hand. He moves to touch a gold band with a fat jewel, tracing it as he sees the rest of his life unfolding in perfect saccharine. He sees Bucky kneeling in the garden, humming to the strawberries and he sees Bucky in the kitchen, his apron fluttering as he spins to the music and into Steve’s strong arms. Suddenly he’s melting again, all of his joints going liquid as an image appears in his mind's eye:
Bucky, in a white wedding dress.

Summary
The porch light flips on very suddenly.
“Steve?” Bucky whispers softly, keeping the bulk of his body hidden behind the patio door. His eyes slide wearily to the #1 BOYFRIEND mug Steve’s ready to pitch at him. He doesn't seem frightened, just sleepy and unamused. “Steve it’s three in the morning.”
Steve relaxes with an exhale, hunching back onto his step. He discards the mug, letting his head fall into his hands. “I’m sorry, Buck. Go back to bed.” The yard is illuminated by the porch light now, and Steve can see the shape of the barn and the chicken coop in the distance.
Bucky doesn’t go back to bed. He pads across the patio, vulnerable in his bare feet and short nightgown, and wiggles right into Steve’s lap. For a second Steve has to rearrange, awkwardly holding onto Bucky as he settles. Bucky is easy to look at, like this. His eyes are closed, head tipped neatly against Steve’s shoulder to reveal the unblemished column of his throat. His nightie is a soft pink number, decorated with roses. For a long time, Steve just holds Bucky, staring into the darkness. It seems farther away, with the light at his back and Bucky against his chest.
