He sat on a bench next to the sidewalk, pressing his right hand over his scar. He deserved that scar.
(He was too much like his father.)
His fingers dug into tender, crinkled flesh, making his skin tingle in remembered pain. He hissed, self-hatred oozing from him in fits and bursts. Why couldn’t he have died in his mother’s womb, never to be born? At least then, his mother would have never had reason to snap. All her troubles were his fault-- and for what? His father’s legacy to be surpassed-- for the pride of a man who hated and burned and lied through blood-stained teeth.
“I am ice,” he growled. “Ice is calm, ice is resilient.”
But yet, ice submits to the flame.
