Sam has been discreet for a long time. He can almost convince himself he’s comfortable, if not happy (he’s an excellent liar). He can almost convince himself it’s enough (until life proves it’s not).
Or: John Royce isn’t a traitor but an FBI agent hunting for the man who killed his ex-lover (still a little shit though), Sam Gerard deserves nice things (John Royce is a nice thing), Cosmo Renfro is the best bro (because Sam deserves nice things), Poole ships it (and makes popcorn), and the author sat down to write a quick fic about Sam having some fun because Royce is pretty (and then John Royce cartwheeled in shouting CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT).

Summary
Sam Gerard is a force of nature whose default setting is stone-cold bastard. John Royce is an unrepentant jackass with a smart mouth and a stubborn streak as wide as the Midwest. This should end as all wars do: in devastation, pointless cruelty, and entirely too many casualties. All logic says they won’t become friends, given that they barely seem friendly. Certainly not good friends, and definitely not lovers. A few perspectives as to how a war ended up in love instead, and how love became a war worth fighting for.

Summary
Catherine Walsh had a feeling in 1974 that offering Sam Gerard a job was one of the best hiring decisions she had ever made as Deputy Marshal. Eighteen years later, Walsh knows it’s one of the best decisions she ever made with the Marshals Service. This is completely irrelevant to the fact that Sam is one of her most difficult Deputy Marshals, for reasons Walsh is familiar with and for one particular reason that Walsh has guessed but is not her business to know. Until two organized crime detectives decide it is her business to know, and that it’s her business to use it to fire Sam.

Summary
The dark reminds Sam of things he doesn’t want to remember, and the dark behind his eyes is even worse. And so he switches on all the lights and reminds his hands of safe tasks until the daylight comes again and it’s easier to remember the people who need him. But Sam has been alone for a long time and doesn’t want John to see what he struggles to remember in the dark. John reminds him that sharing the dark can also mean giving someone permission to leave a light on for you.
