Summary
John had been gripped with a migraine all day. It started not long after Henry had left the house to meet with other Wanderer mates, who happened to be in London as well—a small network of support, people who could hopefully better understand what he went through than John ever could.
In a way, he was grateful Henry was away and therefore could not see him like this. Sweat-soaked nightshirt, face pressed against a pillow to avoid light as much as possible, despite the drawn curtains, hair plastered against his forehead, eyes undoubtedly bleary and unfocused.
It was in the darkness of the early night that it began to relent. And precisely when Henry came home.

Summary
After some twenty years in the Navy, Henry had stopped being surprised by what he saw about a decade ago. Not that he didn’t enjoy new sights, far from it; he was always delighted to discover parts of the world, but after three crossings of the Atlantic and then some, he was able to keep his breath and remain grounded upon seeing something that had other sailors frozen in wonder.
A decade, until now. They had just passed the tip of Greenland and Henry, while on a very unfortunate Middle Watch on the main deck, witnessed something that did steal his breath.

Henry let out a short, broken laugh that sounded more like a wheeze than anything. John did not know what to make of it—what it meant, what emotion it held.
“A bird—here,” Henry said after wetting his cracked lips with a touch of his tongue. “I couldn’t remember the last time I saw one.”
