“I want him safe," Maric said, desperate. "I want him as happy as he can be, considering. I want him free. So I’m being selfish, Eamon.”
The Grey Warden, Duncan, disturbs a young Arl Eamon in the middle of the night. He leads him out into the hills surrounding Redcliffe, where Eamon’s erstwhile brother-in-law, King Maric, charges him with a daunting responsibility.

Summary
9:15 Dragon.
The boy looked more like his true father and his half-brother every day. Acted like them. Amity spoke of Alistair's charm, Aleda of his address; at times, Eamon could swear he saw Maric looking out of Alistair's face. Just as well Eamon did stay away from court these days. He could never take the boy there. Never.
As his young ward grows, Eamon begins to have some difficulties respecting Maric’s wishes to keep Alistair anonymous. With noble visitors passing through Redcliffe on various business, it’s hard to hide the identity of a child who so resembles his birth family and will insist on drawing attention to himself.

“It’s time you started to grow up," Eamon announced. He bent over, opened a cabinet, and withdrew a small bundle. Livery, Alistair saw, like the servants wore. "Verral in the stables has been gracious enough to offer you an apprenticeship with him."
At eight years old, Alistair is removed from his home in the servant’s quarters at Redcliffe Castle. The arl says he’s ready to take on more responsibilities, but as Alistair is stripped of his lessons with his old tutor and put up alone in a loft large enough to hold an entire family, or so he’s told, he wonders if Eamon perhaps has another motive for wanting him away from the castle.

Summary
9:20 Dragon.
Alistair lay on his back in the dust, staring at the clouds in the bright spring sky. His lip was fat and sticky with blood. "Let's play a game," he said. "Who’s the worst person I could possibly be found by with horse manure in my hair? Hello, Bann Teagan. So glad you’re back to visit."
It’s not exactly accurate that the boys of Redcliffe don’t like Alistair. In fact, they can positively enjoy seeing him. After all, who’s going to care if they knock around the local nobody? After one such encounter, Bann Teagan has a talk with his brother’s ward.

Alistair shook his head. "He just lies and lies, and everyone knows he’s lying. The arlessa isn’t pleased, and I know I’ve gone and ruined everything, but it isn’t my fault!"
When Eamon brings his new wife back to Redcliffe and the Arlessa Isolde meets his ward, Alistair, she makes the same assumption about him everyone has his entire life. But without any real truth to give her in place of threadbare lies, Alistair looks forward to life under the new lady’s mercies.

“It’s been . . . difficult for you here, since my marriage. I had not anticipated that it would be, but over the past few months, I’ve started to wonder if . . . if this is really the best place for you anymore.”
Arlessa Isolde never did take to her husband’s ward or to the rumors surrounding him. But when the arl decides to send Alistair away, perhaps as much for the boy’s own safety as for the comfort of Isolde, he determines the boy should not go away without being as prepared as he can be to protect himself in the wider world.

Summary
9:23 Dragon.
“It was cold at night in the Bournshire monastery chapel. Mother Amity was big on saving money. She didn’t hold with leaving candles burning at night when everyone was supposed to be in bed, unless they were doing penance or extra prayers, like Alistair was supposed to be.”
Confined to the Bournshire monastery chapel one night to pray after an offense earlier that day, Alistair thinks back over his first few months with the Chantry brothers and sisters and the other child wards.

Summary
9:24 Dragon.
“Eamon had always made it abundantly clear that he was a bastard and a commoner; the Lady Isolde, in the little less than a year that she'd had, that anything anyone gave him was more than he deserved. But his whole life, there’d been that second message, veiled—
‘You’re a bastard and a commoner. Be grateful for what you’ve got, and don’t expect anything, but—'
But.”
Alistair advances at the Bournshire Monastery. He does well in combat training for the Templars and enjoys his academic studies. He establishes a wary truce, if not friendship, with the other ward children. But he can’t help but wonder if his successes at the monastery are the result of his own merits or of special consideration.

Summary
9:25 Dragon.
“There were minstrels on every street corner; traveling players; vendors selling fried dough, spiced apples, or sausages. It was important the new king keep the people's spirits up, touring the most important corners of Ferelden even in the dead of winter to show them everything was fine.”
Given leave to go to town to buy supplies before he enters Templar training proper, Alistair is in the city of Gwaren when King Cailan comes through on his royal progress. As Alistair enjoys the festivities with two impoverished street children and a fake fortune teller, he thinks about how two dead women can make the difference between a man on a war horse in a procession and a boy with no second name on the street, on the way to a position he has no desire to fill.
