Summary
There were times when Winchester looked just like Carinthia.
In those rare, quiet moments when Mello would gaze out the window and realize that it had stopped raining, that the puddles on the sidewalk glittered like broken glass, he swore he could see himself as a child trudging home from school.

Summary
The bus came to a screeching halt in front of him, and he boarded, sitting towards the back.
Mello was still out there somewhere. He hadn’t given up. The vague, frantic-sounding ‘I need your help’ over the phone had proved it.
Hesitantly, Matt took his wallet out of his pocket, sorting through the expired gift cards and receipts he had never bothered to throw away until he came to the picture turned face down in the back.

Summary
Matt heard him screaming what surely must have been curse words in his native language behind him, his footsteps becoming heavier and his breathing more erratic as he pushed other kids out of his way to chase him.
He was dead for sure.
But even as a nine-year-old, Matt loved the rush of adrenaline.

Summary
He felt sweat on his forehead.
What right did he have to question God?
What right did he have to question anything?
He stepped onto the sanctuary stairs and approached the bishop.
Mrs. Barett put her hand on his shoulder.
For a single moment, standing there for everyone to see, surrounded by stone and stained glass, the eyes of carved angels looking down at him, Mello felt as though he was standing at the edge of two worlds, about to walk from one into the other.

Summary
Sometimes, Tokyo felt like Los Angeles—the early days. Before it had been expensive imported chocolate and whores he’d always refuse, it had been moths fluttering about the lights in his cramped apartment while he drank shitty coffee and fretted about his rent.
Sometimes, Tokyo felt like New York—His enemies hiding among the skyscrapers, frustratingly unconcerned with his threats and plans while they watched him from above.
That night, it felt like Gethsemane.
