"Wwx is a shapeshifter, but after the fashion of a selkie, he has a pelt that he cannot be parted from. Well, Madam Yu (no surprise), parts him from it, inflicting pain and weakness on him – sometimes on purpose, sometimes just by virtue of him missing half his body. The year as a student in Cloud Recesses is the worst, and lwj picks up on wwx’s mysterious illness, and how the jiang family and disciples are determined to protect him and hide his weaknesses.
The pacing of the story lingers on his childhood in the jiang sect (where everyone adores him except madam yu), the student days, and then post Burial Mounds, ending (happily) after the Sunshot Campaign. Events more or less follow canon, except with more tiger ;) (Once wwx leaves the burial mounds, he stumbles over nie huaisang, and they have a nice relationship as traumatized ex-prisoner and tramatized tiger, but hey, they just go with it.)" - MojoFlower/WangxianFicRecs
