Summary
For all her new husband is one for dramatics, their wedding is short. Perfunctory. Performed without any real ceremony beyond the repeated words and a kiss she means to keep dry, but as he always does, Aleksander coaxes her open for him despite her better judgement. It takes all of ten minutes for Alina Starkov to disappear, Lady Alina Kirigan standing in her place. A fitting change it is to have a lie for a name to match her sham of a marriage. “Something wrong?” Nikolai calls her back, squeezing the hand he holds up by their shoulders. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“No, it’s nothing. I’m just looking for A–the General.”
“Ahh,” he nods, like he expected that. “A bit old for you, no?”
She sputters, taken aback by his boldness. Only the royal family would dare speak of Aleksander like that. If only Nikolai knew exactly how right he was about her dear husband’s true age. “General Kirigan suits me fine, thank you.”
