A fic series dedicated to the hot mess that is Gwen and Owen’s affair, how it evolves, breaks down, becomes a lovely friendship, and eventually how Gwen copes in the aftermath of his death(s).

Notes:

With this series I hope to go where no fic writer has gone before with this pairing: actually give it depth. Many writers either lump Gwen and Owen into the romantic category, or just don’t cover their relationship at all because their affair is very divisive amongst fans. I have never been of the mind that they were meant to be endgame, even Eve Myles and Burn Gorman don’t think they were meant to be. They’re a complicated mess, too, and I guess it’s a lot to unpack. But at this turning point in their lives, they needed each other, and I really respect the writer’s choice to transition their relationship into friendship come season 2. It could’ve been so easy for Gwen to pine romantically for him for the rest of the series, but I’m glad they didn’t. It helps that Eve and Burn have this lovely natural chemistry together (c’mon Big Finish, give us the Gwen and Owen audio we deserve). I really wanted to talk about aspects of their characters that were implied in the show, but not really explored. Gwen clearly has a major guilt complex, and needs reassurance that her actions are justified, while Owen has some serious intimacy issues that he represses through his sarcasm, and angry deflections. But their relationship eventually evolves and they really bring something good out of each other by the end of season 2. No disrespect to the hustle of writing, but I just found a lot of fics just didn’t capture who Owen and Gwen really were as a pairing, and my philosophy is if I can’t hear the characters voices in my head, I change the dialogue. (Seriously I’m very auditory and when I write I literally hear the characters yammering away in my brain all the time) I understand their motives for reaching out to each other at this time in their lives, and I find their minds very interesting to write about, so here you go. Here is a series of salacious smut, copious arguments, a whole lot of angst, and a whole lot of sarcasm. You’re welcome.

The title of this series is from the song of the same name by Bruce Springsteen; a song that was instrumental in the writing process of not only this series, but my original Gwen/Owen fic Various Storms as well.
