Summary
Benny’s voice catches in his throat, not sure where he’s going to go. In his mind, he had all of this planned out, a big elaborate speech with numerous chess references, a speech declaring to her and to everyone that he loved her. But now, looking at her and into her eyes, those words don’t come to him.
Instead, he kneels and cuts to the endgame.

Summary
This thing with Benny is like a game. But they’ve always been good at games, have always been playing some sort of game. Sometimes, Beth thinks it’s a game of cat and mouse. But then she doesn’t know who is who and sometimes she thinks they’re both both and she can’t unravel them in her head.
Maybe that’s why she keeps going back to him. She can never untie where she ends and where he begins, not really.
Sometimes, she thinks if she thought about it too much, she could spend the rest of her life trying to untangle them.

Summary
Whatever this thing is between them though, whatever different ideas they have about it, the one thing they are both aware of is its temporality. It is like a game of speed chess, the pieces falling through their fingers, grasped for a second before onto the next one. They don’t talk about it, spend their time together communicating in other ways, ways they’ve always been better at, like chess and sex. But it is understood that this exists in the world of hotel rooms, Benny’s basement, and Benny’s beetle. The world where only they exist, and the only thing between them is a chessboard. Where there is no time control and the board is clear.
