“What the hell is this?” Sam asked, setting down his plate next to Bucky.
And Bucky just about jumped out of his skin.
“You can’t be behind the counter,” he said, after he straightened up his face enough to turn around.
“Well, I am, and I want to talk.”
“Go talk to your date,” Bucky said, and started to turn back around.
“My what?”
“Your date,” he snapped, voice raised, and turned to face Sam once again.
So much for keeping his cool.
“That girl you brought up in here trying to be funny. How old is she anyway? Fourteen - Fifteen? You trollin’ high schools now, Wilson? ‘Cause she—
“Let me stop you right there,” Sam cut in, jaw clenched, “before you say something that you can’t take back and I can’t forgive.”
Or: Sarah’s just trying to have a nice visit. Sam’s just trying to get some food and introduce his sister to his newest friend. And Bucky’s just trying not to lose it. Things do not go exactly as planned.

“Yeah, right.” Sam laughed. “Sarah likes you, sure, but don’t get it twisted; she’s not about to go cater to your finicky ass cat.”
“You’re willing to do it,” he replied, voice just this shy of being sassy.
Sam shrugged. “Guess that means I like you more than her.”
And if Bucky was blushing a moment ago, his face was downright on fire then. Something about Sam’s tone… it almost sounded like flirting, but that couldn’t be…
Could it?
“Anyway,” Sam went on before Bucky could even begin to formulate a reply that wouldn’t betray his complete lack of chill. “You go do your thing, I’ll keep an eye on the hellcat, and the next two days will be over before you know it, okay?”
Or: Sam is checking up on Alpine. Bucky is freaking out. And Joaquin is just trying to be a nice guy.

Summary
This was supposed to be simple. Romantic and a little bit nerve-racking, sure, but simple.
Bucky was supposed to stick his fork into the brownie, feel the clang of metal hitting metal, notice the ring, and then Sam would drop down to one knee, and yada yada yada.
Instead, Bucky had mumbled, “I’m starving,” picked up his brownie, and had the entire thing stuffed into his mouth in two bites so quickly that Sam could have sworn he inhaled it without chewing.
Now Sam’s brain was running a mile a minute, while he stared at Bucky and wondered just what he was supposed to do next.
Or: Sam’s just trying to propose, but Bucky isn’t making it easy.

Summary
When Sam opened the card and saw “James” scrawled on the left side, the corner of his mouth ticked up into a smile.
But as soon as he read the note on the right half of the card, his smile immediately dropped.
“Honey, meet me at our spot tonight at eight. And you better not be late again either. Last time we almost got caught, and that’s the last thing we need. See you soon! XOXO”
Three things: If Sam and Bucky had a spot, it was definitely Sam’s bedroom. As far as he knew, he hadn’t been late to any of their hookups, because, again, they were in his own room. And, they didn’t need to worry about getting caught, because everyone in the compound already knew they were sleeping together, even if they didn’t acknowledge it.
So, yeah, Sam realized pretty quickly that the card wasn’t to him from Bucky. It was for Bucky, from God only knew who.
Or: Sam and Bucky each suspect the worst, and chaos ensues.

“Is he with you or not?”
Rhodey sighed, managing to sound as put upon as he could. “You know, after an hour of looking at the gaudiest rings on the planet with you, while you alternated between glaring at me when my opinion wasn’t forthcoming quickly enough, and glaring at the saleswoman when she couldn’t conjure up whatever ring you’ve been picturing in your head, you’d think I at least warranted a hello.”
“Hello, Rhodey,” he bit out, and Rhodey laughed. “Is Sam with you?”
“Nooo,” he singsonged. “And given the fact that I literally just left you, shouldn’t you know that, super spy?”
“It’s super soldier,” Bucky corrected, tartly. “And I just wanted to make sure. You guys aren’t playing golf today?”
“Seeing as how we have a meeting at the tower in a hour, no.”
“Oh.”
Bucky had known Sam wasn’t with Rhodey, but having it confirmed still felt like a blow.
Or: Sam’s running errands and Bucky’s imagination is running wild… or is it?
