He's been dreading this for weeks.
Oh who is he kidding, years.
Ever since the lawyers of their respective countries finally came to an agreeable solution regarding the marriage contract of Crown Prince Matthias Helvar of Fjerda to Princess Antonia Zenik of Ravka. Before that, even, the thought of marrying a faceless stranger for the sake of his country had terrified him.
He's seen her official pictures, heard all the rumours of Princess Antonia’s beauty, that she is witty and vibrant. Royalty are good at managing images. The picture they paint isn't likely to be the truth.
Maybe that's why it surprises him so when she enters the banquet hall.

Summary
Matthias is a romantic at heart.
He doesn't deny it, but at times it is inconvenient. Perhaps it'd be easier accepting an arranged marriage and going with the flow if he wasn't.
But he wants to woo her. She's such a marvellous woman, and he feels she deserves to be courted, appreciated, even if theirs isn't quite a love match.

Summary
"Stop kicking me," Nina hisses through the polite and regal smile she's holding for the artist, half twisted in her chair for their individual portraits. Like old-school headshots, she'd joked this morning.
Matthias is in a similar position on his own chair, head tilted towards the artist capturing him in turn, but seated close enough for his feet to touch hers. It's only their upper bodies that are needed, since the chair won't be visible in the final product. Nina manages to send him an impressive glare for a smiling woman, and he withdraws his foot quickly.
"Touchy, touchy," he teases and returns his face to neutral quickly.
"I'll show you touchy," Nina promises viciously out of the corner of her mouth.
Matthias feels this is a good time to shut up.

Part 3 of the Helnik Royalty AU, based on a lovely prompt in a comment: I would love to see them have to sit for an old school portrait (probably at the insistence of some older relative who declares that photographs are just not the same) and have to sit very still together keeping each other entertained while the painting gets done.

Summary
Christmas banquets and New Years galas are all the same – the same themes, same music, same kind of classy entertainment – year after year. Matthias has never found them exciting. Even Christmas has long since lost its charm. When expensive clothes and items are an everyday requirement, gift-giving can easily get excessive. He really appreciates his little sister's handmade or thoughtful gifts – Embla has always been artistic – but the family traditions have felt a tad stiff and planned and lackluster. The highlight has always been decorating their own private tree together, and getting a few rare days of downtime between Christmas and New Year's Eve.
Nina throws all his expectations for another boring holiday season out of the window.
