Summary
Dean keeps his gaze on the shadows. “He told me he loved me.”
Sam makes a noise of acknowledgement in his throat, but says nothing, waiting for Dean to continue. Dean turns around, confused by Sam’s lack of response. Sam is watching him sympathetically, expecting more details, and there’s no trace of surprise on his face.
“You knew?”
At this, Sam does look surprised. “You didn’t?”
Dean lets out a long breath, trying to stave off the ache in his chest, and looks back up at the sky. “I guess not.”

Summary
Cas swallows, his cheeks flushing in embarrassment even in the moth-speckled light. He lifts his hands, and Sam realizes for the first time that he’s holding something.
It’s a cassette, the tape spilling from it in a tangled, kinked-up mess that crinkles in Cas’s fingers. The label on it has faded from overuse, the Sharpie barely legible anymore, but Sam doesn’t need to look closer to know it says Dean’s Top 13 Zepp Traxx.
“I’ve been trying to fix it for hours,” Cas says, and suddenly Sam doesn’t care at all what time it is.

Summary
He wanted to give up his grace. And the Empty tore it from him and destroyed it without concern, but that shouldn’t matter. It shouldn’t, because Cas would have chosen to give it up anyways if it meant being here, on Earth, with Dean. Really, the Empty did him a favor.

Summary
Once the Empty spat him back out like an offending watermelon seed, Cas got one or two clothing items from Dean, but he mostly wears castoffs from Sam. Wearing Dean’s clothes feels too quick, too intimate for where they are right now, whatever label-less thing they have.
He looks ridiculous, really, in Sam’s clothes.
Everything is too long, too wide, and seems to swallow Cas whole. Even Jimmy’s clothes had been too big on him, oddly, the suit and coat wearing Cas more than the other way round, but that was nothing compared to Sam’s things. He has to roll up the sleeves on all the shirts in order to use his hands, and the pants bunch up around the ankles. He looks like he’s wearing a plaid flannel tent.
And so, nearly two weeks after Chuck’s demotion, Dean can’t take it anymore.

Summary
Some changes are small: Dean laughs more readily these days, he’s up earlier and the alcohol in the kitchen isn’t depleted as quickly. Cas is more animated too, less weighed down, standing straighter. Other changes are bigger, and Dean apparently thinks they’re doing a good job at hiding it.
But subtlety has never been Dean’s strong suit.

Summary
Somehow, even though they’ve salted and burned his body, Cas still expects Dean to appear as a ghost. Surely Dean has enough unfinished business in this life to tether him here even without his bones. Every night Cas waits, staring into the dark until it swims, willing Dean’s shape into formation at the foot of his bed. Every night, Dean doesn’t show.
Cas is angry. He’s furious. After the first few weeks of numb, barely-functioning denial, Cas settled comfortably into the second stage of grief and got stuck. He’s not tried to bargain. He’s too angry to be depressed. And he sure as hell isn’t accepting anything.

Summary
“Jody?” Alex says suddenly, a worried frown etched into her face as she gazes past Claire to the living room. At the same time, Patience puts down her fork.
Claire twists in her seat. Instantly, the sunny mood over the dining table is swept up in a cloud. Jody is standing with her phone still in one hand, her coffee all but forgotten in the other. She stares into the middle distance, shocked to stillness, and when she speaks her words come out a rasp.
“That was Eileen Leahy.”
Terror surges up from the pit of Claire’s stomach, and Kaia reaches for her hand. She knows that tone of voice; they all do. “What happened?” she asks.
“Dean Winchester died last night.”

Summary
Dean opens his eyes, and it’s sunset. He blinks, disoriented, and stares up at a rosy sky and lush green mountains. The air is clear — pine and spruce and distant snow — and he watches a hawk wheel high above. It’s peaceful, and beautiful, and confusing as hell.
Only a moment ago — was it longer? — Dean was inside a dilapidated barn, inhaling blood and sweat and bile. Sam’s face flashes in his head, wide-eyed and tear-streaked, terrified. Pain spikes in Dean’s back, but it’s only a phantom. He reaches behind and touches his spine where the rebar had nearly cut him in half, and feels nothing. No wound, no wet patch of blood. He’s whole.
“Fuck,” he whispers to himself as realization settles cold over his shoulders.
He’s dead.
