Summary
Kore accepted all the shy words, eager gifts and bold looks with the same sort of confidence as a queen receiving tribute. Theirs was a small village, tucked away beneath the earth, miles from the Gates and anything of interest. A pretty girl was as good as a princess there and Kore thought herself a merciful ruler over her adoring flock.

Summary
Rin must see the distasteful look on her face. She shakes her head, almost amused, and pops a grape into Kore’s mouth with her own teasing fingers. “Women’s work…but you’ll love the babe Kore….and even if you cannot, whisper only sweet things in its ears. Children depend on their mothers…someday you might depend on it.”
Kore ventures unwillingly into motherhood and realises the babe is hers, not his.

“We’ll see,” Kore says, closing her eyes and hugging Desha closer to her. “Mama loves you, my little prince. You’ll be a wonderful big brother.” Kore isn’t confident of much, but she is sure of that. Desha, despite his fits of fury, has a wonderfully loving nature. Behind the shyness, he is sweet and good, so eager to love and to be loved. This little one is lucky in that. Kore can’t give them much, but she’s given them him. “You’ll be good friends…such good friends…”
Kore tries to raise her sons as best as she can with their father's shadow looming over them.

Summary
Kore shudders. Again? Eight years and never once had Satun shown the faintest bit of interest in his firstborn. Or his second-born for that matter. Why now did he prowl the sparring yard, leering over her son like some sort of grotesque gargoyle?
Kore gives birth to her last child and does what she can to protect her eldest son from his father’s unwanted attention.

Some nebulous day, Kore might sit in a chair and carve toys for little golden and ebony-haired children, pulling at her skirts and begging her for sweets.
Kore is mother and father both to her children, but in the last year of her life, she wonders often of their future and of the men they may become.
