Summary
It is a truth universally acknowledged (by Andrastians, at the very least) that in the year 9:30 Dragon, the Maker, in his despair for the creations he had so loved, rescinded the gift and burden of the practice of magic. Studied now only as a historical curiosity, magic has not guided the fate of Thedas for well over eight centuries; Enlightened Age is a modern one of genteel manners, of civility and philosophy.
One Miss Lavellan, an accomplished young lady of almost-respectable family, quite enjoys her life of happy near-gentility, so when several most shocking and disconcerting things occur, which indicate the possible resurgence of magickal forces within the universe, she is most vexed to be called upon to put things to rights. In her journeys she will encounter ships-of-the-line (and a pirate who outsmarts them), nearly-tamed dragons, men who purport to be gods, and bald persons of questionable moral character sleeping beneath hedges; elegant hands which heretofore only played the pianoforte will guide the fate of Thedas as a whole--but not without a very smart bonnet.

Summary
Hawke is a dragon captain who spends his spare time smuggling slaves into the free Ferelden, Fenris is a refugee with baggage, and a large magical lizard plays matchmaker.
"Captain Garrett Hawke, RFAC, of His Majesty’s Dragon Champion, was flying far out of his patrol grounds--several hundred miles, in fact, if he reckoned correctly (which he very nearly almost always did). His mission this evening was, of course, not strictly endorsed by the Admiralty, but so long as nothing actually happened in his and Champion’s territory, he wasn’t breaking any rules, not technically, anyhow. Beside that, the people he was serving and protecting were Fereldans--at least, future Fereldans, and the small issue of their not yet having set foot on Fereldan soil shouldn’t prevent him from giving them his best."
